Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak over a move in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid are the latest club to show an interest in Alexander Isak heading into the summer transfer window. The reigning La Liga champions are eyeing the 21-year-old Real Sociedad striker as an alternative to priority targets Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.
Alexander Isak has enjoyed a fine resurgence since ending his ill-fated spell with German giants Borussia Dortmund. The Swedish forward arrived at Real Sociedad in the summer of 2019 and over the last couple of years, he has been arguably one of the more exponentially growing players in La Liga.
The ongoing campaign has been a solid one for the 21-year-old, who has scored 14 goals while also providing a couple of assists in 31 La Liga appearances. His continued progress has invariably piqued the interest of one of the biggest clubs in Europe, with Real Madrid keen on signing Isak.
Real Madrid appear set to begin overhauling an ageing squad this summer following their listless performance against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League this week. And, attack is one of the areas that are set to be bolstered ahead of the 2021/22 season, and for good reason.
Ever since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo three years ago, Real Madrid have been overly dependent on Karim Benzema for goals. The same has been the case this term and with the French forward well into his thirties, it is imperative that Los Blancos ease some of the burden off of their talisman.
To that end, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe have been identified as the priority targets, with the former reportedly intent on joining Real Madrid this summer. However, the finances involved in signing either player might be out of reach for a cash-strapped Real Madrid, which is why they are being forced to consider alternatives.
To that end, the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Andre Silva and Dusan Vlahovic are among those to have been linked with Real Madrid lately, with Isak emerging a viable target as well. With the 21-year-old now well-settled in Spain, he could even be a better option compared to other alternatives for the defending La Liga champions.
Isak could, in theory, start off by being an understudy to Benzema, replacing the underperforming Luka Jovic and Mariano Diaz in the Real Madrid squad, before eventually taking over as the first-choice striker. Having said that, it remains to be seen if the Swede ends up being pursued for good this coming summer.
