Transfer News: Liverpool eyeing Eduardo Camavinga as Georginio Wijnaldum replacement

Liverpool reportedly view Eduardo Camavinga, who is also a target for Real Madrid, as a possible replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum.

According to a report by Daily Express, Liverpool’s search for a replacement for contract rebel Georginio Wijnaldum has taken them to Ligue 1. Eduardo Camavinga has emerged on the radar of the Premier League champions over a move in the summer transfer window, with Real Madrid also interested in him.

Camavinga has been under the spotlight for a couple of years now, having made his first-team debut for Stade Rennais aged just 16 back in April 2019. Since then, he has gone on to become a mainstay in midfield for the Ligue 1 club while also breaking into the French national side.

The ongoing campaign has been a slow one for the 18-year-old, but there is no denying the talent and potential of the French midfielder, who has already racked up 77 appearances for Rennes. Indeed, the teenage prodigy has admirers all across Europe, with Real Madrid being linked with him heavily for months now. And now, Liverpool have also set their sights on him.

Real Madrid’s interest in Camavinga makes a great deal of sense. While Federico Valverde is likely to be Luka Modric’s successor when the Croat calls it a day, it is important to note that Toni Kroos is also into his thirties, meaning Los Blancos will soon need to start laying down the succession plan for the German playmaker.

In addition, with Isco expected to leave the club this coming summer, Real Madrid also have an immediate need for a midfielder, making Camavinga a viable target, who can also act as a deputy for Casemiro. Reports have suggested that he is keen on joining Real Madrid, but Liverpool’s entry into the picture could complicate matters for the Merengues.

The reigning Premier League champions are bracing themselves for the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum, having been unable to reach an agreement with him over a new deal. With his current contract running out this coming summer, Wijnaldum will leave Liverpool as a free agent, thereby necessitating the arrival of a replacement, with Ryan Gravenberch among those they have eyed.

Camavinga, too, is a viable target for Liverpool, with the 18-year-old drawing comparisons with Patrick Vieira. In fact, it has been suggested by the report that Liverpool could be leading the race to sign Camavinga, and are likely to launch the offensive for him this coming summer. Having said that, it will be interesting to see what Real Madrid can do about the Reds’ interest in him.
