Barcelona have reportedly initiated discussions with the representatives of Sergio Aguero over a possible move this coming summer.

According to claim made by Jose Alvarez on Spanish outlet El Chiringuito TV, Sergio Aguero’s representatives are in Barcelona to begin negotiations over a possible Bosman move in the summer transfer window. The Argentine forward is set to leave Manchester City at the end of the season.

Aguero has enjoyed an illustrious ten-year spell with Manchester City, having established himself as an all-time Premier League great since arriving from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011. The Citizens’ all-time top goalscorer, Aguero has played a leading role in their transformation into one of the most fearsome sides in Europe over the past decade or so.

The veteran Argentine striker’s numbers for Manchester City are simply astounding as well, having plundered 257 goals while also providing 73 assists in 385 appearances. However, Aguero’s time at the Etihad is drawing to a close, with his contract running out this summer and a renewal officially not being handed to him. This has alerted several top European clubs, including Barcelona.

In fact, at one point, it was also reported that Barcelona were on the cusp of signing Aguero, before other suitors emerged in pursuit of the 32-year-old in the wake of the announcement that he was not going to remain at Manchester City beyond this season. The interest from Barcelona, though, makes a great deal of sense.

The Blaugrana chose not to replace Luis Suarez with a like-for-like replacement following his exit last summer. The Uruguayan forward’s departure left Ronald Koeman with Martin Braithwaite as the only out-and-out striker at his disposal, with Antoine Griezmann and Lionel Messi also being options to be deployed centrally.

Griezmann, though, has blown hot and cold over the course of his Barcelona stint and it has also been mooted that he could perhaps be on his way out of the club this coming summer. Even if the French forward stays put at Camp Nou, it is prudent for Barcelona to invest in a new striker, thus making Aguero a viable target.

The veteran Argentine striker, though, has also been courted by a number of other top clubs across Europe, with certain reports claiming that he was also open to joining Chelsea. Now, though, it looks like Barcelona have taken a major step towards securing the services of Aguero this coming summer, having begun talks with his representatives.

It will now be interesting to see if discussions between the two parties progress smoothly, which would then mean that Barcelona will have inched closer to signing Aguero in the summer. If not, it will not be surprising to see him remain in the Premier League, with Chelsea keen on signing him.
