Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur could be set to battle it out for the signing of Juventus superstar Paulo Dybala in the summer transfer window.
According to an update from French magazine France Football (h/t Sport Witness), Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur could be poised for a summer transfer war over the signing of Juventus ace Paulo Dybala.
The 27-year-old Dybala has been with Juventus since the summer of 2015, having arrived from fellow Serie A outfit Palermo. During his time at the club, the Argentine attacker has tasted immense success. However, things are looking bleak for him as far as his immediate future in Turin is concerned currently.
Indeed, Dybala has endured a difficult campaign, having had to warm the benches more often than not under new manager Andrea Pirlo, who has largely favoured the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvaro Morata, Dejan Kulusevski and Federico Chiesa in attack over the 27-year-old.
Matters have not been helped by the fact that the former Palermo ace has been struggling with an injury either. And with his contract up for expiry in a little over a year, the report states that Juventus could very well decide to cash in on La Joya come the summer transfer window.
This has seemingly alerted both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, who are willing to pay around €50-€55 million to secure the signing of Dybala before next season kicks off.
Chelsea bolstered their attacking contingent last summer with the additions of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech. However, none of the new signings has made the impact that was expected of them. Add to it, Olivier Giroud’s advancing age and Tammy Abraham’s uncertain future, it is understandable as to why Chelsea could look for a new attacking addition.
While Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund has been mentioned as a top transfer target for the Blues, they now could offer Dybala a way out of his misery in Turin. But, the west London giants could face stiff competition in their pursuit of the Argentine from local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
It is no secret that Tottenham are long-term admirers of Dybala and came very close to signing him in 2019, only for the deal to fall through due to third-party image rights issues. However, there is no denying that they could use someone of his ilk and quality in their attacking unit as they have been way too reliant on Harry Kane and Son Heung-min for goals.
While Gareth Bale has stepped up in recent weeks, the Welshman is only on loan till the end of the season. So, someone like Dybala, who can play alongside Kane at the top or out on the right, could be a vital addition for Jose Mourinho’s side.
Dybala has managed a return of just three goals and two assists from 16 games this term. In spite of that, his quality and pedigree are undoubted. It remains to be seen if the interest from either of Chelsea or Tottenham leads to anything substantial in the coming weeks.
