Manchester United are considering a summer move for AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli, who could be set to depart San Siro.
According to a report by Italian outlet Il Milanista, Alessio Romagnoli faces an uncertain future at AC Milan, who are contemplating a possible sale in the summer transfer window. This has alerted Manchester United, who, along with Everton, are weighing up a swoop for the Italian international.
Romagnoli is a product of the AS Roma youth academy but never quite managed to establish himself in the first-team setup in the Italian capital. And, following a loan spell with Sampdoria, he was hauled off to AC Milan on a permanent transfer in the summer of 2015.
Since joining the Rossoneri, the Italian defender has been a mainstay at the back while also being promoted to the role of club captain at the onset of the 2018/19 season. Till date, Romagnoli has made 219 appearances for AC Milan, but now faces an uncertain future at San Siro following six fruitful seasons. This has piqued the interest of Manchester United.
Manchester United are reportedly set to enter the transfer market for a centre-back due to the fitness concerns that have plagued Victor Lindelof this season. The Swede has been struggling with a chronic back issue and with Eric Bailly also dealing with a spate of injuries over the course of his stint with the Red Devils, the need to bolster the heart of their defence is understandable.
To that end, Manchester United have been linked with a number of centre-backs, including another Serie A defender Gianluca Mancini. And now, AC Milan captain Romagnoli has emerged on their radar as well.
The report claims that Romagnoli and his agent Mino Raiola have not taken the recent decision to rotate him kindly. And, with his contract having a little over a year remaining, there is a feeling that 2020/21 could be the final season at AC Milan for the 26-year-old, who is also being tailed by Everton, managed by former boss Carlo Ancelotti, apart from Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Manchester United also have another AC Milan superstar – Gianluigi Donnarumma – in their sights, and a double raid on the Rossoneri could be on the cards. What now remains to be seen is if Romagnoli makes his way to Old Trafford, or if some other suitor swoops him away instead.
