Chelsea have expressed an interest in signing Borussia Monchengladbach star Jonas Hofmann as part of his summer reinforcements.
According to SportBild, Chelsea are ready to raid the Bundesliga once again, following the appointment of Thomas Tuchel and one player they are keeping a close eye on is Jonas Hofmann. The Borussia Monchengladbach star faces an uncertain future at the club after Marco Rose announced his departure and a move away from Borussia Park next season could be on the horizon.
A product of the Hoffenheim youth academy, Hofmann has worked with Tuchel during their time together at Borussia Dortmund. He was in charge of the player during his first season at the club, with the attacker notably making just seven Bundesliga appearances before being sold to Gladbach for a fee of £7 million.
It turned out to be a real bargain for Foals as Hofmann has enjoyed a massive improvement in his game during his time at Borussia Park. Especially under current coach Rose, the 28-year-old has become one of Gladbach’s leading creators, notably being involved in 12 goals in just 15 matches this term.
In addition to his productivity, the former BVB star has become much more versatile and can play not only as a wide playmaker but also as a number ten and even as a number eight, if required. His chance creation and versatility are combined with a brilliant work-ethic that makes him a vital asset in Gladbach’s first line of press.
Hofmann’s performances in the Bundesliga has undoubtedly impressed Tuchel, who will be keen on signing more versatile playmakers in his team this summer. Mason Mount is a talented star but he can be way too one-dimensional at times, while Ross Barkley is likely to leave Stamford Bridge on a permanent deal, with Chelsea reportedly looking for £40 million.
Premier League 2020/21 Mid-Season Review: Chelsea
Hofmann, in that regard, could emerge as an ideal alternative for players like Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz. His past experience with Tuchel should also help him quickly settle into life at Stamford Bridge. But most importantly, the 28-year-old is likely to be available for a cut-price, given his age as well as a contract that expires in 2023.
However, Chelsea’s move for the playmaker could hinge on Borussia Dortmund’s pursuit of Florian Neuhaus. The German international has been linked with a move to Ruhrpott and the links have only intensified following Rose’s confirmation. Unfortunately for the Blues, his potential move to BVB could force the Foals to step up their efforts of keeping hold of Hofmann.
