Transfer News: Chelsea join Manchester United in Jadon Sancho pursuit

Chelsea are reportedly ready to rival Manchester United in the pursuit of Jadon Sancho, who is likely to leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

According to an exclusive report by Sport1, Borussia Dortmund are bracing themselves for the departure of Jadon Sancho. The Bundesliga outfit has faced massive financial losses in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, and are in desperate need of external income in order to balance the books.

Cashing in on Sancho appears to be the only option for Dortmund, who had made the shrewd decision of keeping hold of the Englishman last summer, despite attempts from Manchester United. The Red Devils, though, are likely to come back for the winger in the summer but are expected to face stiff competition from league rivals Chelsea.

The Blues have shown a renewed hunger in the transfer market following the appointment of Thomas Tuchel last month. While the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic are likely to play a key role at Stamford Bridge, the Chelsea boss could definitely fancy raiding his former employers for Sancho.

The Borussia Dortmund star had an awful start to the Bundesliga campaign this term, failing to provide the productivity that was prevalent in the previous season. However, he has recovered his form since the turn of the year, being directly involved in seven goals in 2021. The player has also racked up nine assists overall – making him one of the best chance creators in the Bundesliga.

Sancho’s trickery and combination play on the flanks could certainly be useful for Chelsea. Perhaps more importantly, the Englishman likes to drift inside, which tunes in well with Tuchel’s tactics that put greater emphasis on creating chances from the middle of the park, with the full-backs providing width.

Manchester United also make a strong case, as far as the potential suitors for Sancho go. The Red Devils have re-established themselves as a strong contender for the Premier League title, and have steadily improved under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The addition of the Englishman should further enhance their quality in the final third, especially alongside Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.

For Dortmund, their immediate focus should be on making a quick recovery following a disastrous start to the year. The Black and Yellows are dawdling outside the top six, and missing out on Champions League action next season could have dire consequences, including but not limited to the departure of Sancho, who could join either Chelsea or Manchester United in the summer.
