Liverpool have completed the signing of English centre-back Ben Davies from EFL Championship outfit Preston North End.

As confirmed on the club’s official website, Premier League champions Liverpool have made their first signing of the winter transfer window, securing the services of Ben Davies from second division side Preston North End.

The 25-year-old came through the Lilywhites academy and had become a key first-team member after a series of loan spells at lower league clubs. Having made over 140 appearances for Preston, Davies’ future at the club had become a hot topic of speculation last month as he entered the final six months of his contract.

Reports of a shock move to Liverpool emerged on Sunday night, with the Reds desperately in search of a new centre-half after being hit by a major injury crisis that has seen the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Fabinho all getting sidelined.

And on the transfer deadline day, Jurgen Klopp’s men have addressed the issue with the signing of Davies from Preston North End. “I’m obviously delighted to be here,” the Englishman told Liverpool’s official website after the completion of the transfer.

“It’s a huge opportunity. Obviously, it came as a bit of a surprise when it first came but once you start to get your head around it, the opportunity that is in front of me is incredible. I’d be silly to not make the most of it and learn off the players [at the club].”

“I’ve never actually been to Anfield and I haven’t had a look around yet. I had a quick look out and had a look at the pitch and it looks like carpet, which obviously you’d expect. I haven’t actually walked out of the tunnel yet, so I’m looking forward to that. Just to be in this kind of atmosphere is brilliant.”

As reported by BBC, Liverpool will be paying a transfer fee of £500,000 up front for Davies, with structured add-ons worth up to £1.1m with a 20% sell-on on profit. The report also goes on to add that the Merseyside giants will soon follow up with the signing of Ozan Kabak from Schalke as well.
