Transfer News: Manchester United, Manchester City step up Gabriel Veron interest

Manchester United and Manchester City have reportedly stepped up their efforts to sign Gabriel Veron, who is also a target for Juventus and Barcelona.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Sport, Gabriel Veron has no shortage of suitors as his talent continues to burgeon. The 18-year-old Brazilian winger is now a target for Barcelona, while the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus have already stepped up their interest in him.

Veron joined Palmeiras in 2017 before going on to finish his footballing education a couple of years later at the Brazilian outfit. The teenage prodigy then broke into the first-team setup at the club in November 2019 and has since continued to grow in stature at the Allianz Parque.

Till date, Veron, who is a winger by trade, has turned out 34 times for Palmeiras, with 10 goals and 5 assists to show for his efforts. It is his performances in the Copa Libertadores, in particular, that have caught the eye of some of the biggest clubs in Europe following his exploits at the Under-17 World Cup. Currently, Manchester United and Manchester City are among the clubs interested.

Manchester United have long been in search of a right winger to add to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad and take it to the next level. The lack of one has often forced the Norwegian to deploy Marcus Rashford on the right flank this term to varying degrees of success, with Mason Greenwood blowing hot and cold in his second full season with the first-team.

The Red Devils remain in the hunt for Jadon Sancho while the likes of Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri could be options for years to come as well. However, if Manchester United manage to sign Veron, they will have an immediate solution despite his nascent age. United, though, face stiff competition from Manchester City in his pursuit.

At Manchester City, the output of Riyad Mahrez has often been quite disappointing this season, with Raheem Sterling also not performing at his best levels on a few occasions. Having said that, Phil Foden has stepped up remarkable and Ferran Torres is one for the future, so it will be interesting to see how Pep Guardiola fits Veron in his side, if City do manage to sign him.

The report has suggested that Manchester United and Manchester City, along with Juventus, have stepped up their efforts to sign Veron, making their first moves to secure his services. Apart from the trio, Barcelona are also set to enter the race to sign the 18-year-old Brazilian, who has a €60 million release clause in his Palmeiras contract.

The Brazilian giants, though, only want to recoup an amount that exceeds the €32 million they made from selling Gabriel Jesus to Manchester City. What now remains to be seen is if Manchester United, City or others reach an agreement with Palmeiras over a transfer fee for Veron anytime soon, or if some other suitor like Real Madrid or Arsenal swoop him away instead.
