Transfer News: Leeds United the favourites to sign Fikayo Tomori

Leeds United are reportedly in pole position to secure the services of Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori on loan for the rest of the season.

According to a report by BBC, Fikayo Tomori could be set to make his way to Leeds United before the January transfer window slams shut. The Whites are the favourites to sign the English centre-back from Chelsea on loan for the remainder of the season.

Tomori, a part of Chelsea since joining their academy in 2005, first made grade in the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge a few years ago. However, it was not until the 2019/20 season, following a successful loan spell at Derby County, that the youngster finally enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at the west London club.

However, his stock has since plummeted dramatically, with the likes of Thiago Silva, Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger all ahead of him in the pecking order. As a result, the 23-year-old has made just three appearances for Chelsea so far this term. His dire situation has alerted a number of clubs towards the prospect of a potential availability, one of them being Leeds United.

Leeds United signed two centre-backs in the summer transfer window in Robin Koch and Diego Llorente. Koch ended up quickly cementing his place at the back, but is currently on the sidelines due to a long-term injury. Llorente, on the other hand, is yet to establish a foothold in the Whites’ backline.

With captain Liam Cooper also recovering from an injury, Marcelo Bielsa has Luke Ayling and Pascal Struijk as the only other central defensive options at his disposal. As a result, Chelsea outcast Tomori has emerged as a viable target to pursue.

Certain reports, though, had suggested that the Blues might not be open to the prospect of Tomori joining a fellow Premier League club, thereby paving the way for a move abroad. However, as per BBC, Leeds are the favourites to secure the services of the youngster, as they search hard for a cover for the injured Koch.

For now, what appears to be certain is that Tomori could be on his way out of Chelsea this month. What now remains to be seen is if the Premier League heavyweights do entertain an offer to loan out the 23-year-old, should Leeds come up with a bid over a move in the January transfer window.
