Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has insisted that reigning champions Liverpool are the favourites to win the Premier League title this season.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has claimed that as many as seven clubs stand a chance of winning the Premier League title this season, but has pitted arch-rivals Liverpool as the front-runners for the honour.

It has been quite an open start to the 2020/21 season, with teams like Everton, Southampton punching well above their weight and hovering close to the top of the table. In fact, following their 2-0 win over Newcastle United, Southampton are perched at the top, ahead of reigning champions Liverpool on goal difference.

With Liverpool facing Manchester City on Sunday, the Reds can reclaim the top spot with a win, although a loss could see them drop down a few spots, with the Cityzens cutting down the gap to the champions to just two points with a game in hand.

And while it is too agree to call a favourite in the race for the title, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is of the belief that Liverpool will be the frontrunners. “They [Liverpool] are the biggest favourite but I think with what happened with the pandemic the situation it is a bit different,” the ex-Barcelona boss said.

However, Guardiola went on to acknowledge that it will be anything but a two-horse race, claiming that the likes of Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea as well as Manchester United (!) can challenge for the Premier League honours this season.

“I see other teams strong: Leicester maintained the level from last season apart from the last month-and-a-half of it when they dropped points but now have incredibly solid results from their starting XI and substitutions; Arsenal made a big step forward to be contenders; at Tottenham, Mourinho has the team what he wants.

“Chelsea is so stable now, not conceding goals and scoring a lot and has a huge squad for rotating top players; United in this moment is not in terms of results but we saw the quality they had last season, we suffered a lot in results and upfront they are incredibly fast and clinical. They are top class,” he added.

Even though it is still early days in the season, Sunday’s game between Liverpool and Manchester City will be a pivotal one for both teams with regard to the title race.
