Transfer Rumour: Liverpool rekindle pursuit of Diego Carlos

Liverpool are reportedly interested in Diego Carlos once again, amid the worsening injury crisis, and could make a January move for the Sevilla defender.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Todo Fichajes, Liverpool have rekindled their interest in Diego Carlos, as their injury woes continue to deepen. Jurgen Klopp is eager to bring the Brazilian defender on-board at Anfield, with the Reds ready to offer Sevilla €50 million plus bonuses for him.

Diego Carlos joined Sevilla from Ligue 1 club Nantes in the summer of 2019 and took no time in establishing himself as a mainstay in defence for Los Nervionenses. The 27-year-old missed just three La Liga games for the Spanish outfit last term and has been ever-present at the back so far this term.

Indeed, Carlos played a key role as Sevilla won the UEFA Europa League last season and his displays have invariably caught the eye of some of the biggest clubs in the world. In particular, Liverpool have been keen on snapping up the Brazilian defender for quite some time now.

Liverpool were, in fact, hot on the heels of Carlos all through the summer, with the Sevilla star the priority defensive target for them following the departure of Dejan Lovren. In the end, though, a move failed to materialise, with Jurgen Klopp having to suffice with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip as the only recognised centre-backs at his disposal.

However, Liverpool have been thrown into disarray, as far as defence is concerned, with Virgil van Dijk sidelined for the remainder of the season and perhaps, beyond. On top of that, Matip’s fitness struggles have continued at the onset of the 2020/21 season.

Gomez, therefore, remains the only fit centre-back, with Klopp having to select Nat Phillips against West Ham United on Saturday. While Phillips did impress at the heart of the Liverpool defence, the Reds remain down to their bare bones at the back, which is why a January signing appears to be imperative.

The Premier League champions, to that end, have been linked with Ozan Kabak, while also being tipped to sign Conor Coady. Liverpool, though, have distanced themselves from the rumours linking them with Kabak and now, Carlos has emerged as a target.

The stumbling block in pursuit of the 27-year-old is his €70 million release clause. Liverpool, though, are ready to offer €50 million plus variables for Carlos and are confident that they can prise him away from Sevilla this January. What now remains to be seen is if Liverpool do launch the offensive for the player and if their offer is accepted by Sevilla.
