Manchester United are reportedly considering a move to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in next summer’s transfer window.
According to a report by The Athletic, Erling Haaland is the subject of interest from Manchester United over a possible move in next summer’s transfer window. The Premier League heavyweights are set to make the Norwegian striker their priority at the end of the season if he is open to leave Borussia Dortmund.
Haaland has taken the footballing world by storm in the past twelve months or so. One of the most prolific strikers in the game in this period, Haaland had an eye-watering return of 44 goals and 10 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions last season, showcasing incredible productivity for both Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund.
The 20-year-old has started the current campaign on a strong note too, with 7 goals and 3 assists in 8 outings so far. His stupendous rise to fame has invariably piqued the interest of the who’s who of European football, with Real Madrid among the clubs monitoring his progress constantly. Now, though, Manchester United are in his pursuit.
Manchester United had been one of the clubs that had been keen to secure the services of Haaland in the January transfer window before he ended up joining Dortmund. The Red Devils’ interest in the prodigious striker has not wavered one bit, though, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to reunite with the promising striker he groomed while at Molde.
At present, Anthony Martial is the first-choice striker for Manchester United, with Edinson Cavani set to provide stiff competition to the Frenchman after joining on a free transfer this past summer. Beyond the duo, Solskjaer also has Odion Ighalo at his disposal, with Mason Greenwood touted to be a long-term solution.
However, Greenwood might have to contend with a place on the right wing, as the latest rumour suggests that Haaland is in Solskjaer’s long-term vision for Manchester United. The Athletic also claim that Manchester United retain good relations with Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola despite refusing to agree to his valuation in January.
Haaland’s deal with Dortmund contains a release clause worth €75 million, which can be triggered in the summer of 2022. However, Manchester United are prepared to sign him for a greater sum next summer, despite the fact that they could extend Cavani’s stay by twelve months at the end of the season.
For now, it looks like Haaland is the long-term priority for Manchester United, with Dortmund teammate Jadon Sancho also continuing to be on their agenda. It will be interesting to see if the English giants launch the offensive for the 20-year-old next summer or if they wait a further year to make a move.
