Arsenal & Chelsea have joined the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach star Matthias Ginter, who is also courted by Inter Milan.
Matthias Ginter is up in the air once again following yet another impressive season in the Bundesliga. And according to Sky Germany, as relayed by journalist Ronan Murphy, Arsenal and Chelsea have expressed interest in the Borussia Monchengladbach defender. He is also courted by Italian giants Inter Milan.
Ginter being subjected to the interest to a host of big clubs across Europe comes as surprise given the success he has under Marco Rose. Although he only has an outside chance of becoming a first-choice centre-back for Germany in next year’s UEFA European Championships, a big-money move in the summer should help him enhance his reputation.
Chelsea, in particular, look to have finally set their sights on a defender, having mostly targeted attackers so far this summer. In fact, they have already secured the services of stars like Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner while they are also on the verge of completing a deal for Bayer Leverkusen sensation Kai Havertz.
Ginter could be a useful addition to the Chelsea side for multiple reasons. He could provide the much-needed competition for the likes of Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger and Fikayo Tomori. He can also partner up with Andreas Christensen as he was the Dane’s initial replacement at Gladbach back in 2017.
Arsenal, on the other hand, are also in need of reinforcements in the defensive department. The Gunners are bracing themselves for the potential departures of players like Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis while the likes of Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari have both struggled with injuries.
Therefore, Mikel Arteta could certainly use someone like Ginter in his ranks. The German international would be an ideal defensive partner for the likes of David Luiz and William Saliba. His defensive commitment and no-nonsense style of play should allow more freedom to those ball-playing centre-backs in the three-man backline.
Having said that, Ginter surely won’t be available on a cut-price given the fact that he is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga. Arsenal, for one, were also linked with a move for his defensive teammate Nico Elvedi earlier this year so it will be interesting to if these Premier League giants end up getting their hands on the Gladbach ace this summer.
