Angel Gomes is reportedly ready to switch Manchester United for Chelsea on a free transfer after failed contract negotiations with the club.
According to a report published by Daily Mail, Chelsea are ready to sign Angel Gomes from Manchester United on a free transfer after his contract expires on Tuesday.
Gomes has been a part of the United U23s team for over a year now after initially impressing for England in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017, where he was the captain of the team. He received his Manchester United debut earlier that year against Crystal Palace where he came on for Wayne Rooney in the final two minutes of the game.
The 19-year-old has failed to live up to the hype he created a few years ago, with players like Tahith Chong and Mason Greenwood getting the nod ahead of him in the first team. He has only made two appearances for United this season in the Premier League warranting a combined total of 20 minutes.
Apart from that, Gomes has also featured in 3 games in the Europa League, but has failed to score or assist in either of the competitions, even though he has shown elite levels of dribbling and vision in moments.
The Englishman has been subject to a lot of rumours over the past few months, primarily because he refused to sign a deal with the club, rejecting an offer of £25,000-a-week. He has been linked to the likes of Juventus, Valencia, Benfica and Hamburg, but Chelsea seem to be leading the race to secure his services at the moment.
Frank Lampard & co. have been linked to Kai Havertz as well, who plays in a similar position as Mason Mount, but could be out of reach this summer due to COVID-related financial issues. Gomes, however, could serve as a worthy deputy to Mount in the attacking midfield role. He can also slot in at the left-wing, although Chelsea might not need him there courtesy of Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Speaking of the contract negotiations in an interview, Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer revealed he wasn’t too sure if the Gomes would sign the extension, saying, “To be honest, I’ve not heard from them last night or this morning so it seems like they haven’t managed to agree. The answer is short and yes. I’ve got no news. It doesn’t look like it.”
The Manchester United contract rebel’s contract ends tomorrow after which he can be pursued directly by clubs skipping negotiations with United. Bringing in Gomes on a free might help Lampard solve a lot of Chelsea’s creativity issues in the final third.
