Transfer Rumour: Liverpool weighing up Houssem Aouar move

Liverpool are weighing up a possible move to sign Houssem Aouar in the summer transfer window, with Lyon ready to cash in on him.

According to a report by French publication L’Equipe, Houssem Aouar could be available for transfer in the summer transfer window. Liverpool are interested in signing the French midfielder, who is valued by Lyon at €50 million, and could sanction a move for him.

Aouar joined Lyon as an 11-year-old in 2009 and gradually grew threw the ranks in the club’s youth setup. The Frenchman was given his break in the first-team aged just 18 in 2017 and he has since gone on to cement his place in the senior side. Now a mainstay in the midfield for Les Gones, the 21-year-old has already racked up close to 150 appearances for the club.

However, despite enjoying a solid 2019-20 campaign, Aouar might have played his last game for Lyon. Having missed out on European football after the Ligue 1 season was brought to a premature end, Lyon are likely to begin an overhaul this summer, with a few big names set to leave. Aouar is one such player, and Liverpool are hoping to pounce on the situation.

Liverpool have enjoyed a stunning 2019-20 campaign and are likely to win the Premier League title once the season resumes. However, if reports are anything to go by, Jurgen Klopp is not going to rest on his laurels and is eager to create an even more formidable squad.

To that end, midfield is seen as an area that needs strengthening, with Marcelo Brozovic among the players that have been linked with Liverpool. Aouar, though, is a different profile of player and the interest in him does seem to be understandable.

Adam Lallana appears to be set to leave Liverpool as a free agent this summer, with a renewal still not agreed. In addition, with Naby Keita struggling to stamp his authority and justify his price tag, a possible summer departure from Anfield has been mooted.

If both Keita and Lallana end up leaving, Liverpool will need to sign a central midfielder, despite the advent of Curtis Jones this season. To that end, Aouar is a viable target for the Reds to pursue. The 21-year-old Frenchman has a €50 million price tag and it will be interesting to see if the Merseyside club are open to meeting that valuation.

For now, it looks like Liverpool could sanction a move for Houssem Aouar in the summer transfer window, with the young midfielder appearing set to leave Lyon. With the bad memories of the botched Nabil Fekir transfer still fresh in everyone’s minds, it remains to be seen if Liverpool can succeed in swooping the 21-year-old away from the Groupama Stadium.
