Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has reportedly rejected a new contract offer from the club, unhappy with the wages being offered.
According to a report from the Mirror, Chelsea star Tammy Abraham has refused to put pen to a new contract put forth by the club, as he seeks parity in wages with his other teammates before committing his future.
Abraham, a product of the Chelsea youth academy, is enjoying a breakthrough season under Frank Lampard. Having spent the past few seasons out on loan, the Englishman finally got his chance with the Blues’ first-team owing to their transfer ban and he has made the most of the opportunity.
Abraham, so far, has bagged 15 goals in 34 matches across all competitions this season, playing a key role in Chelsea’s push for a top four finish in the Premier League as well as their progression in the UEFA Champions League. Due to his impressive form, the centre-forward has also forced his way through into the England national team setup.
Given his rise in stature at the club this season, Chelsea are intent on securing Abraham’s long-term future. To that end, the West London outfit are understood to have tabled a new contract to their star striker, but have seen their offer get rejected by the 22-year-old.
The reason behind Abraham’s refusal to sign the new contract, as per the report, is that he is seeking wages on par with some of his other teammates who are on a higher salary compared to what is being offered to him.
Chelsea have tied down a number of players to new deals recently. The likes of Reece James, Fikayo Tomori, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mason Mount, and Callum Hudson-Odoi have all signed extensions with vastly improved pay packets. That stands true especially in the case of Hudson-Odoi, who was handed a deal worth £180,000-a-week, to stave off interest from Bayern Munich.
Abraham, who is currently out nursing an ankle injury, still has two years left on his current contract, which gives Chelsea time to work out terms over a new deal. It now remains to be seen if the Blues decide to meet the 22-year-old’s wage demands.
