Official: Barcelona confirm agreement with Palmeiras to sign Matheus Fernandes

Barcelona have reached an agreement to sign Brazilian midfielder Matheus Fernandes from Palmeiras in the summer transfer window.

Barcelona have confirmed on their official website that they have an agreement in place to land promising midfielder Matheus Fernandes from Brazilian outfit Palmeiras in the summer transfer window.

Fernandes started out at the academy of Botafogo and made his first-team debut for the club in 2016. Having made 76 first-team appearances, the midfielder switched to Palmeiras in January last year. The 21-year-old made just 11 appearances for the club in 2019, scoring a solitary goal in the process.

Fernandes has represented the Brazil U-17 and the Brazil U-20 teams on two occasions each.

A defensive midfielder by trade, Fernandes is known for his ball-winning abilities in the middle of the park, while he is equally adept at carrying it forward from the centre. Barcelona have been monitoring the 21-year-old’s progress for a long time now, with the Catalans linked with a move for the Brazil U-20 international way back in 2017.

Rumours of the La Liga champions’ interest in Fernandes resurfaced again in January, and Barcelona have now gone on to confirm that they have agreed a deal with Palmeiras for the signing of the Brazilian youth international.

As per the agreement, Barcelona will be paying €7 million to Palmeiras for Fernandes’ services, with a further €3 million in add-ons. The midfielder will be signing a five-year contract with the La Liga champions which includes a whopping €300 million release clause.

Fernandes becomes the 12th player to play for Barcelona and Palmeiras, following in the steps of the legendary Rivaldo, as well as Yerry Mina, who had signed for the Blaugrana from the Brazilian outfit in 2017.

Fernandes will not be joining Barcelona immediately, with the transfer set to be officially completed on the first of July later this year. This comes as Barcelona’s second dealing in the January transfer window, following the arrival of Portuguese youngster Francisco Trincao from SC Braga, who has been dubbed as the new Cristiano Ronaldo.
