Having struggled defensively this term Tottenham are looking at reinforcements in January, with Barcelona’s Nelson Semedo on Jose Mourinho’s radar.

According to a report on Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are weighing their chances to sign FC Barcelona and Portugal international full-back, Nelson Semedo.

Having allowed Kieran Trippier to join Atletico Madrid in the summer, Tottenham were left with Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Pieters as the only natural right-backs in the squad. But, with the latter set to join Crystal Palace on loan, Jose Mourinho is in desperate need of a right-back in the winter transfer window, leading to the interest in Semedo.

Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has generally preferred Sergio Roberto at right-back over Nelson Semedo, with the Portuguese mostly finding himself in the bench in crucial matches. Moreover, the Blaugrana are supposedly looking to sign Brazilian right-back Emerson from Real Sociedad.

The 20-year old rose from the ranks in the club and recently earned his international cap with Brazil in their 3-0 win over South Korea. Brazil national team head coach, Tite, rates Emerson very highly and the Barcelona management is also very impressed with the player and is considering a move for the youngster. So they may allow Nelson Semedo to leave Camp Nou this season.

Spurs are struggling with their defence as Aurier has been very off colour in the last few matches and it is an area which Mourinho wants to address as early as possible. Semedo is lethal with his overlapping runs and dangerous crosses into the box for his fellow forwards.

The Portuguese international’s pace also helps him stop wingers in their tracks coupled with his tenacity which can make him an ideal player in Mourinho’s system. Reports also suggests that Norwich City’s young right-back Max Aarons is on Tottenham’s radar as a possible alternative.

While there are several other issues with the Lilywhites, Mourinho is trying to at least meet the priorities in this transfer window. With Harry Kane sidelined for a considerable amount of time, the Portuguese tactician is planning to bring in reinforcements in the attacking department, while a new right-back will also be a priority.

Semedo, who has made 20 appearances this term, is contracted with Barcelona till 2022. The Portuguese has been on the radars of Premier League clubs in the past and it remains to be seen if Tottenham do go on the offensive and try to sign him before the transfer window slams shut.
