Chelsea superstar Pedro, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has talked up a potential return to former club Barcelona in the summer.
In an interview with SER Catalunya, as reported by Spanish outlet Sport, Chelsea forward Pedro has claimed that he would love to return to former club Barcelona as he nears the end of his contract.
Pedro came through the youth ranks at Barcelona before breaking into the first-team in January 2008 under Frank Rijkaard and was one of the mainstays in Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side. The 32-year-old racked up 321 appearances for the Catalans scoring 99 goals and setting up 61 more.
Pedro won five La Liga titles, three UEFA Champions League trophies along with numerous other honours before leaving the club in the summer of 2015 to join Chelsea. The attacker has featured on 192 occasions for the Blues with 42 goals to his name and has won the Premier League, along with an FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League.
However, the 32-year-old has found game time hard to come by under new manager Frank Lampard this season. The Spaniard finds himself behind the likes of Willian, Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi in the pecking order, which has resulted in just nine appearances for him, in which he has scored and assisted one goal apiece.
Pedro’s current contract with Chelsea is set to expire at the end of the ongoing season. With no talks of a new deal, there has been a lot of speculation surrounding his future. And addressing this, the Spanish attacker has claimed that he would be open to a return to former club Barcelona.
Speaking to SER Catalunya, Pedro said, “Everyone knows what I feel for the club and it’s evident that it’s a possibility to go back. I’ve always said it. It’s a club I have special love for because I support them. I’ve had so many experiences there and was there so many years, I feel loved by the fans.”
Following Pedro’s statements, Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has left the door open for the Spaniard’s potential return to Camp Nou. As quoted by Daily Mail, the Blaugrana boss said, “He is a historic player at this club. He is one of the players here with the most club titles. He is at another club and we have to respect him. We will see what the future holds.”
There had been reports of interest from Italian giants AC Milan and Inter Milan earlier this year, but that seems to have cooled off now. With Pedro seemingly seeking a return to Barcelona and Valverde also hinting at the possibility, it will be interesting to see if the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner ends up back at Camp Nou in the summer.
