Chelsea are looking to tie defender Emerson Palmieri down to a new deal, with the Italian international forging his place as the first-choice at the club.

According to Daily Mail, Chelsea are looking to hand an extension to Italian international Emerson Palmieri. The full-back has impressed in recent times and has permanently usurped Marcos Alonso as the first-choice left-back at Chelsea, who are now planning to tie the player down for the future.

Emerson Palmieri joined Chelsea in January 2018 from AS Roma under the tutelage of Antonio Conte. But, there weren’t high hopes from the Italian international, especially with his manager preferring Marcos Alonso at left wing-back. The same continued under Maurizio Sarri in the initial months.

But, the current Juventus manager then decided to give Emerson an extended chance, owing to his form in the Europa League. The full-back did not disappoint, usurping Alonso as the first-choice at Chelsea. With Sarri gone and Frank Lampard now at the helm, Emerson has continued to be the first-choice for the club over Alonso.

In fact, the 25-year-old has played each and every minute of Chelsea’s 2019-20 campaign so far in all competitions. With Chelsea unable to delve into the transfer market in the summer and unlikely to be allowed to sign players in January 2020 either, Emerson is likely to keep his place as the first-choice on the left side of the back four for a strong period.

Hence, a new deal does make sense from Chelsea’s point of view. A new contract will also help Chelsea tie Emerson down for the long-term while also giving the 25-year-old a just reward for his improved squad status and influence within the team.

The report does quantify the increase stating that, as per Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea want to extend Emerson’s deal up to 2023, with the new contract likely to pocket him £4.5 million in wages annually, excluding performance related bonuses.

There have been murmurs that Chelsea are plotting a move for Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell once the transfer ban is lifted. Till then though, Emerson is likely to hold his place in the starting eleven, judging by his performances so far. And the improved deal would spur him on to perform better.
