Official: Everton sign Alex Iwobi from Arsenal

Arsenal have confirmed Alex Iwobi’s move to Everton with the deal believed to be around £35-40 million.

The transfer window for English clubs might be over, but some deals were announced well past the deadline. Among those were the moves for David Luiz and Alex Iwobi. However, Arsenal have now confirmed their agreement with Everton for winger Iwobi who will join the Goodison Park outfit for a fee believed to be between £35-40 million

Arsenal also announced the capture of Chelsea’s David Luiz, after both clubs agreed on an £8 million fee earlier in the day. Following the Luiz announcement, the North London club have now confirmed the departure of Iwobi who will now leave Arsenal after joining the club aged 7.

Due to pending paperwork and formalities, the announcement of the deal was delayed as the extended deadline to complete moves had already passed. Everton had made a £30 million bid for the winger yesterday, which was rejected by Arsenal. There was a belief that Arsenal would accept an improved offer, depending on their business today.

The Gunners signed Kieran Tierney from Celtic in a £25 million deal late in the window, and after Luiz’s capture the North London side had to balance their books. It could be the reason why they accepted an offer for Iwobi so late in the window. However, between Everton’s bid and the deadline, there was enough time to get a medical and all formalities done.

Iwobi is all set to join Marco Silva’s side for the foreseeable future. Everton had been chasing a winger in this transfer window and will be happy at getting Iwobi. The Toffees were heavily linked with Arsenal target Wilfried Zaha, but his club Crystal Palace resisted big money offers throughout the window.

Everton also completed the signing of Moise Kean from Juventus a few days ago, and Silva would be content with the players that came in this summer. As for Arsenal, they were unable to offload some of the stars they wanted to leave. The likes of Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan remained in the side as Iwobi was not necessarily for sale this summer.

As things stand, the Gunners have sanctioned a sale for the Nigerian, despite the winger having a good season under Emery. He will now join a host of talented players at Everton and will be hoping to cement a place in their starting lineup.
