Transfer News: Chelsea icon Gary Cahill wanted on free transfer by Burnley

Former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill, who is a free agent now, is reportedly a transfer target for Sean Dyche’s Burnley.

As per a report from The Sun, former Chelsea superstar Gary Cahill is wanted on a free transfer by Premier League side Burnley. The Clarets are willing to offer the former England international a contract worth £30,000 per week to secure his signing for the upcoming season.

Cahill, 33, is a free agent now, having been released from Chelsea upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the 2018-19 campaign. The centre-back brought an end to his seven-year association with the West London outfit, during which he won every trophy for the taking at club level.

During his time with Chelsea, Cahill made 349 appearances scoring 27 goals and assisting 11 more, on his way to winning two Premier League titles, two FA Cups, a League Cup, a UEFA Champions League trophy and two UEFA Europa League trophies, including one in his final season at Stamford Bridge.

Despite the silverware in his final season with Chelsea, it was not a pleasant one for Cahill as he fell out with then manager Maurizio Sarri and featured just eight times in all competitions. Since leaving the club, the 33-year-old has garnered a lot of interest owing to his experience and know-how at the topmost level.

There had been reports of interest from newly-promoted outfit Aston Villa and now as per The Sun, Burnley have emerged as a potential destination for the former England international. The Clarets are on the lookout to bolster their defence ahead of the next season amid speculations surrounding the future of Ben Gibson.

Add to it, defensive mainstay James Tarkowski has also been linked with a transfer to Leicester City, who are looking at the Englishman as a potential alternative for Harry Maguire, who is believed to be closing in on a transfer to Manchester United.

Irrespective of whether Tarkowski leaves or stays, Burnley manager Sean Dyche is keen on adding Cahill to his squad ahead of the next season. To that end, the Clarets have made a contract offer of £30,000-a-week plus appearance bonuses for the 33-year-old.

The report further adds that Cahill is also wanted by Championship outfit Fulham, while Turkish heavyweights Galatasaray have also tabled a contract offer for the veteran Englishman. But, the lure of Premier League might prove to be a clinching factor for Burnley in the chase for the former Chelsea superstar. It remains to be seen if he ends up signing for the Clarets.
