Newly appointed Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte has set his sights on Marcos Alonso as the Italian hopes for a potential reunion at San Siro next season.
According to Tuttosport, as cited by Calciomercato, Marcos Alonso has emerged as the latest target for Inter Milan. The Chelsea full-back has been identified as the desired candidate for the newly-appointed Antonio Conte as he looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of the start of the new season.
Alonso endured a disastrous spell under Maurizio Sarri last season and was only Chelsea’s first-choice left-back due to their lack of depth in the said position. He appeared inconsistent with his performances, although the Spaniard initially rose to prominence in the Premier League under the tutelage of Conte.
Indeed, the former Fiorentina star played a key role in Conte’s wingback system. His ability to make darting runs into the final third coupled with his remarkable technical quality made him a useful component of the Chelsea backline. And the 28-year-old may not be a bad signing for Inter Milan given his previous exposure in Serie A.
Alonso could be the answer to Inter Milan’s lack of quality in the full-back department, especially on the left flank, with Dalbert being the only reliable option. The Chelsea defender, in that regard, will provide competition for the Brazilian and even become a first-team regular at Inter. His excellent relationship with Conte will definitely help him settle in quickly at his new club.
Chelsea, however, simply cannot afford to lose any more of their star players this summer. The Blues have been imposed with a transfer ban that has restricted them from signing any players until next summer. That means, they won’t be able to secure a replacement from the market should they opt to ship Alonso out to Inter Milan.
The West London giants currently have three left-back options at their disposal in Alonso, Emerson and Baba Rahman. However, Rahman is believed to on the verge of an exit from Stamford Bridge, while the Brazilian Emerson has also failed to make a notable impact since coming in from AS Roma. Hence, the presence of Alonso could be paramount for Chelsea next season.
It remains to be seen what kind of tactical style Frank Lampard implements in this new season. But, it has been reported that the club legend has instilled a positive mentality among the players, especially to Alonso, who feels ‘very good’ under Lampard’s style of play.
Therefore, it will be interesting to see whether or not the Spaniard will manage to redeem himself after a difficult campaign. But one thing is for sure – Chelsea will try their best to keep hold of the left-back this summer and perhaps beyond.
