Chelsea are considering making a move for long-term managerial target Frank Lampard, should Maurizio Sarri leave the club this summer.
According to Daily Mail, Chelsea are mulling a move for club legend Frank Lampard in the event of Maurizio Sarri’s potential departure from the club this summer. The current Blues manager has been linked with a move to Juventus and Roma, after a turbulent debut campaign at Stamford Bridge.
Juventus, in particular, are keen to appoint a replacement for the departing Massimiliano Allegri this summer and Sarri has been reportedly eyed as a potential candidate. And this, in turn, could pave the way for Chelsea to make a move for Lampard as their next manager, although Laurent Blanc is also believed to an option.
Lampard is currently in charge of Championship outfit Derby County. The former Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder did exceptionally well to lead the Rams all the way to the promotional play-off final, where they lost to Aston Villa.
The 40-year-old could be an excellent fit at Chelsea as he is well aware of the club’s ethos as well as the atmosphere, having spent the most part of his career at Stamford Bridge. He is also a well-respected figure in English football and should receive enough recognition from the players as well.
But, his lack of experience in the managerial scene could potentially make him a huge gamble from Chelsea’s perspective. As a matter of fact, Lampard only started professional coaching last summer, when he replaced Gary Rowett as the new Derby County manager.
And although he did reasonably well in the Championship, managing in the Premier League could be a whole different ballgame with many respected coaches including Louis Van Gaal, Frank de Boer and Antonio Conte failing to impress in recent years.
In addition, Chelsea’s impending transfer ban will further cripple the former England international in his bid to add a new identity to the Blues camp. Hence, someone like Blanc seems like a better choice for the Premier League giants given the current circumstances.
The Frenchman, though not as successful as Sarri or Conte, is an excellent leader, who has vast coaching experience in the highest level of football. He also knows how to manage the egos around the club while his tactics are very detail oriented.
Lampard, on the other hand, needs some more time to settle himself into the managerial scene before he can be considered as a viable option for Chelsea or any other top Premier League club.
