Manchester United have reportedly set sights on a £40 million summer move for Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye as a replacement for Ander Herrera.
Daily Mail have speculated that Manchester United are moving fast as far as their summer transfer plans are concerned. The Red Devils have locked in on a replacement for Ander Herrera and are looking to engineer a summer move for Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye.
Idrissa ‘Gana’ Gueye is reportedly a summer target for Manchester United, with Ander Herrera confirmed to be leaving the club at the end of the season on a free transfer. The report states that United are willing to challenge PSG for Gueye, who is valued at £40 million by Everton.
29-year-old Gueye started his journey in England with Aston Villa. His performances in what was a disappointing campaign for his club were enough to ensure a move to Everton and the tenacious midfielder has since dazzled the Premier League with his tackling ability, which has earned him a lot of admirers.
Despite the continuous change of managers over the last three seasons at Everton, Gueye has remained a key player and one of the first names on the team sheet whenever available. The midfielder though, has been tipped to leave Goodison Park in the summer, with PSG and Manchester United entering the fray for the 29-year-old.
PSG have been pursuing Gueye for a couple of transfer windows now. The French champions have only disappointment to show for in the Champions League, with another instance of losing their first-leg advantage, albeit this time at the hands of Manchester United.
Thomas Tuchel is already set to be without Adrien Rabiot and Christopher Nkunku is also being linked with a move away from Parc des Princes. January signing Leandro Paredes hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype as of yet, leaving Marco Verratti as the only recognised option.
Ander Herrera is being tipped to complete his move to PSG soon. But, Tuchel might want to get in another experienced head into his squad. Talking about Herrera, Manchester United are looking towards another summer of rebuild and one of their priorities will be to find a suitable replacement for Herrera.
The report iterates that United believe Gueye might aid in enabling Pogba towards more consistent performances. But, Pogba himself is being continuously linked with a summer exit. Irrespective of whether Pogba stays or not, Gueye could prove to be a valuable addition to the squad at Old Trafford.
United have lacked a player with real tackling ability and a knack for disrupting opposition build-ups. Herrera wasn’t a natural but owned up to the role with time. Gueye though, has always been a ball winner in the middle of the park and would enable Manchester United to assert their presence in midfield like their old glory days.
Everton might not want to sell Gueye but will unlikely be left for choice, with both the teams able to offer European football. The Toffees will reportedly be looking to recoup £40 million for Gueye, something both Manchester United and Everton can provide.
Gueye will have a decision to make – to go for PSG, which will be an easier option since he speaks fluent French, or to opt to upgrade his status while being in the Premier League, a league he has grown to be comfortable in.
