Jurgen Klopp is set to ask his club to pursue Marco Asensio this summer after Liverpool failed to land him last season.

Jurgen Klopp is a great admirer of talented Spanish attacker, Marco Asensio of Real Madrid. Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo are reporting that the Liverpool boss might re-ignite his interest in Asensio and ask the club to sign the 23-year-old attacker on priority this summer.

Liverpool have been in formidable form this season fighting on multiple fronts including the Champions League and the tight Premier League battle with Manchester City. While the summer could excite the faithful, Liverpool could be ready to spend big on players that Klopp feels might improve his side drastically for the next season.

Like last season, there were significant outlays on a few players, including Alisson from Roma, and Klopp might want his club to spend big on quality rather than quantity. Such an idea could prompt the club to green-light a move for Real Madrid’s Asensio, who, unlike last season could be available for a transfer.

Asensio has made more than 130 appearances for Real Madrid in his time there, but the majority of which came under the management of Zinedine Zidane who quit the club at the end of last season. There on, under Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari, Asensio has found himself somewhat unwanted, and thus failed to have an impactful season.

Asensio has only played 28 games this season with only 18 of them being starts. His lack of appearances had alerted many of his suitors, and many of them were optimistic they could make a deal with Madrid in the summer. However, the return of Zidane in the hot seat might have changed things for him as he’d prefer to play for the Frenchman and might remain at the club.

Liverpool on the other hand, are entering a crucial summer, where as mentioned before they might invest significantly in their playing squad. The Reds have reportedly asked for Asensio to be included in any deal for Sadio Mane, who has been linked with a move Madrid and they might look to send the Spaniard the other way in any possible agreement.

Juventus are also interested in the Spanish international and so are Chelsea, who themselves might lose their star player Eden Hazard to Real Madrid. If Hazard does join, then Asensio’s place will be in jeopardy and Real are reportedly willing to include the Spaniard in any deal for the Belgian.

Last summer Klopp tried his hand to convince Asensio to join forces, but Real president, Florentino Perez straightaway refused on a deal, insisting the player wasn’t for sale. Asensio has a contract with Madrid until 2023 which has a mammoth release clause of €700 million. That kind of money cannot be afforded by any club right now, but Liverpool, if interested could come to a middle ground.

Will Asensio prove to be a valuable signing for Liverpool? Can Klopp help the Spaniard resurrect his club career and become a prominent personality for the future of the Merseyside club? All those questions will be answered in due time, but the first step would be for Liverpool to make their interest concrete and make a move for Asensio in the coming summer.
