Manchester United will reportedly have to shell out a fee of £26 million if they are to sign Belgian right-back Thomas Meunier from PSG in the summer.
According to a report from RMC Sport, as carried by the Daily Mirror, French champions Paris Saint-Germain have slapped a £26 million price tag on defender Thomas Meunier, who has emerged as a top transfer target from Premier League giants Manchester United.
Manchester United find themselves in dire straits after what has been a woeful 2018-19 campaign. Major squad overhaul is believed to be on the cards in the summer transfer window, and a new right-back should be high on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s priority list.
Antonio Valencia is set to leave in the summer when his contract runs out, while Matteo Darmian could also be heading out at the end of the season, leaving Ashley Young and Diogo Dalot as the only options at right-back. But, recent games have shown that Young is far from an ideal choice and strengthening their defence with a quality right-back is of paramount importance for the Red Devils.
Crystal Palace youngster Aaron Wan-Bissaka had emerged as a potential target for Manchester United, but now Thomas Meunier’s potential availability seems to have put him on top of the 20-time English champions’ shopping list. The 27-year-old has spent majority of his playing career in Belgium with Club Brugge, before switching to PSG back in the summer of 2016.
Since moving to the French capital club, Meunier has made 99 appearances, scoring 12 goals and setting up 20 more, on his way to winning two Ligue 1 titles, including one in the ongoing campaign. However, the Belgian international has found himself competing with Dani Alves and Thilo Kehrer for a starting berth and with his contract set to expire next year, he could be allowed to leave.
Meunier has himself claimed in the past that a move to the Premier League would appeal to him greatly. And that could come to fruition this summer, should Manchester United be willing to match PSG’s asking price of £26 million. However, they will need to act fast if they are to sign him up, as arch-rivals Arsenal and Chelsea too have emerged as potential suitors for the Belgian.
Manchester United’s defence needs a major upgrade in the summer without a doubt and Meunier, who has impressed heavily with PSG and the Belgian national team, would be a solid acquisition at a reasonable price of £26 million. The Red Devils need to be swift to act on their interest though, or risk losing him to Chelsea or Arsenal.
