Transfer News: Manchester United locked in contract talks with Marcus Rashford

Manchester United are reportedly still in talks with Marcus Rashford over a new £150,000-a-week deal, amid interest from Real Madrid in the striker.

According to a report by Daily Telegraph, Manchester United are locked in contract talks with Marcus Rashford over a deal that will see him double his wages to £150,000 per week. The English striker has been heavily linked with a big money move to Real Madrid, who are eager to bolster their frontline.

Marcus Rashford has come a long way since making a memorable match winning debut against Midtjylland as an emergency backup striker amid an injury crisis. The Manchester United academy graduate is now a superstar in his own right, and a pivotal member of the first-team squad at Old Trafford.

In fact, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the 21-year-old has established himself as a first-choice striker, with 6 goals and 2 assists in 10 appearances justifying the faith that the Manchester United interim boss has put in him. On course for his most prolific season to date now, the player is starting to attract interest from Real Madrid.

Karim Benzema has been in fine form this season, almost singlehandedly inspiring Real Madrid to wins at times. But, the Frenchman’s struggles in the two seasons prior to 2018-19, coupled with the fact that he is now on the wrong side of 30, means Los Blancos ought to lay down the succession plan for him.

Rashford is thus, a viable target for Real Madrid, where he could play on the flanks for a year or two before succeeding Benzema as the leader of the attack. But, Manchester United have been eager to rebuff the interest in their academy graduate, and are hoping to tie him down to a new deal.

The Red Devils concentrated almost all of their efforts in sorting out the futures of key players, which started with Anthony Martial’s extension last week. In addition to the Frenchman, several other players, including Rashford, are believed to be on the agenda for Manchester United, as far as contract renewals are concerned, something Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted to in his press conference.

The Premier League heavyweights are currently in talks with the player over a new contract that will see him double his wages to around £150,000 per week, according to the report. Rashford’s current deal runs out in less than 18 months, and although Manchester United do have the option to extend it by a further year, it is imperative they reach an agreement over a fresh contract.

What stands Manchester United in good stead is the fact that Rashford is ready to snub Real Madrid to continue at his boyhood club, and the fact that he will become one of the highest earning players at Old Trafford will only convince him to sign the dotted line soon.

As things stand, Real Madrid, or any other suitors for that matter, are unlikely to secure the services of Marcus Rashford, who looks set to commit his long-term future to Manchester United. United fans will now be yearning for the official confirmation, with the player poised to put pen to paper on a £150,000-a-week deal.
