Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly lining up a £20 million January move for Adrien Rabiot to steal a march on Barcelona for the PSG contract rebel.
According to a report by The Sun, Tottenham are hoping to hijack Barcelona’s attempt to land Adrien Rabiot in the summer transfer window. The Premier League heavyweights are plotting a £20 million move to secure the services of the Frenchman this month, with PSG likely to sell their contract rebel as well.
Rabiot is currently serving time on the sidelines, with PSG excluding him from their plans due to his conduct over contract negotiations. And with the Frenchman’s current deal set to run out in the summer, it has become plainly clear that he is set to call it quits at Parc des Princes at the end of the season.
The player’s potential availability on a free transfer has unsurprisingly piqued the interest of several clubs, making him a hot property in the transfer market. Among his high profile suitors, Barcelona are believed to be the favourites in his pursuit, although the Blaugrana have now been joined by Tottenham.
Spurs lost the services of Mousa Dembele this month, with the Belgian midfielder joining Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F. Additionally, the injury crisis in midfield means Mauricio Pochettino could do with a midfield addition, making Rabiot a viable target for Tottenham.
Barcelona, on the other hand, are stacked with midfield options, which will be bolstered further by the addition of Frenkie de Jong in the summer. It is thus, unclear as to how Rabiot will now fit in the squad, unless the Catalans offload one or two midfielders.
Nevertheless, Rabiot remains a target for Barcelona, who are hoping to sign him on a free transfer in the summer transfer window. But, Tottenham are now plotting a hijack by lining up a £20 million bid to land the French international this month itself.
PSG are open to selling the player for the cut-price amount instead of having to let him go for nothing in the summer. But, Les Parisiens will only sell the 23-year-old if they are able to secure the services of a replacement, even though Rabiot is not part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans.
Meanwhile, Pochettino has reportedly spoken to the player with the hopes of making him the latest PSG player to make his way to the North London club. With the £20 million figure not being too prohibitive for the financially restricted Tottenham, it remains to be seen if they can steal a march on Barcelona for Rabiot, or if his frustrations continue in the French capital.
