Transfer News: Liverpool prepared to offload Fabinho to fund £70 million Christian Pulisic move

Liverpool are reportedly planning to make a move for Borussia Dortmund ace Christian Pulisic, who is also a target for Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Liverpool are prepared to sell summer signing Fabinho, in order to fund a move for Borussia Dortmund and USA superstar Christian Pulisic, as per a report from the Mirror. The 20-year-old is also a target for the Reds’ English rivals Chelsea as well.

Pulisic has been heralded as one of the finest young talents in the game ever since he burst on to the scenes at Dortmund a couple of years ago. Since making his first-team debut in 2016, he has gone on to feature 109 times for the German outfit, scoring 15 goals in the process and setting up 24 more.

The talented attacker has earned 22 caps for the US Men’s National Team, in which he has found the back of the net on nine occasions and was their most impressive player in a 3-0 defeat against England at the Wembley earlier this week.

Pulisic will enter the final year of his contract with Borussia Dortmund in the summer. Negotiations over a new deal are believed to have hit an impasse, leaving the Bundesliga leaders with no choice but to cash in on their prized asset. This has put several clubs across Europe on high-alert, including Chelsea and Liverpool.

Chelsea are keen on strengthening their attacking ranks with a new winger, with both Willian and Pedro not getting any younger and question marks over the future of star man Eden Hazard. The Blues have had a long-standing interest in Pulisic and are now planning to swoop in on the youngster.

Liverpool too, have been casting admiring glances at Pulisic ever since Jurgen Klopp took over the reins at Anfield. The German manager had seen the 20-year-old from close quarters, having asked him to join up with the first-team at Dortmund for some training sessions. Having been impressed with the attacker’s meteoric rise, Klopp is keen on working with him at the Merseyside outfit.

A club source told the Mirror, “Having watched Christian develop there is no way Jurgen is going to back off now. He knows he is a talent who can light up the Premier League.”

Signing him would cost Liverpool in the range of £70 million and in order to fund the move, the Merseysiders are now believed to be willing to let go of midfielder Fabinho.

The Brazilian international arrived from AS Monaco only this past summer, in a deal worth £43.7 million, but has failed to make the desired impact at Liverpool. Since joining, Fabinho has made only 8 appearances across all competitions and was slated by the fans for his poor performance in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal earlier this month.

With AC Milan understood to be intent on securing the midfielder’s services in January, Liverpool are considering the possibility of offloading him to the Serie A giants, to generate funds for needed for them to acquire Pulisic’s signature.

All in all, Pulisic seems certain to leave Dortmund either in January or in the summer transfer window. And with Chelsea and Liverpool clashing to secure the USMNT international’s signing, a bidding war may very well be on the cards. It remains to be seen who comes out on top in the transfer battle.
