La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea superstar Cesc Fabregas, who is also being targeted by AC Milan
According to a report by Daily Mirror, Atletico Madrid have joined AC Milan in pursuit of Chelsea superstar Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard has fallen down the pecking order in dramatic fashion under the tutelage of Maurizio Sarri this season, with as many as four midfielders ahead of him.
Fabregas has been one of the modern day greats in the English top-flight, initially with Arsenal before joining Chelsea in the summer of 2014. With 111 assists, the Spaniard is part of an elite group that has more than 100 assists in the Premier League, and only Ryan Giggs (162) is ahead of him in this list.
But, after four stellar campaigns with Chelsea, Fabregas has been reduced to a bit-part player since the arrival of Maurizio Sarri. The Italian has preferred to utilise the services of summer signing Jorginho to be the chief creator for the Blues, with the likes of Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley ahead of the Spanish superstar in the pecking order as well.
In fact, if early signs are anything to go by, Fabregas will merely be the backup to Jorginho, with each of his four appearances this season coming in the absence of the Italian international on the pitch. It thus, looks like the experienced midfielder’s stint with Chelsea could be about to come to an end, with the likes of AC Milan and La Liga giants Atletico Madrid ready to swoop him away.
AC Milan have already indulged in business with Chelsea this season by signing Tiemoue Bakayoko on loan. But, while the Frenchman’s spell at San Siro might not have started strongly, Fabregas is a player who has been on the Rossoneri’s radar for quite some time now.
With no natural playmaker taking charge of things in the middle of the park, Fabregas is surely a viable target for AC Milan. But his long-time admirers now have La Liga giants Atletico Madrid for company in pursuit of the Chelsea superstar.
Atletico Madrid’s problems are quite clear. Despite sitting third on the La Liga table, goals have come at a premium for them – Los Rojiblancos have only found the back of the net nine times in eight outings. Fabregas’ addition could thus, go a long way in providing the creative impetus from midfield.
For evidence, the Spaniard’s exploits alongside Diego Costa for Chelsea should provide enough sense of optimism. The only spanner in the works for the La Liga giants and AC Milan though, is Fabregas’ insistence that he would like to stay put at Stamford Bridge despite minutes being hard to come by.
Chelsea though, have not offered the 31-year-old a new deal, contrary to earlier reports, meaning the January transfer window represents their last opportunity to cash in on the player. It now remains to be seen if the journey at the Bridge comes to an end for Fabregas, with AC Milan and Atletico Madrid, among others interested.
