Transfer News: Real Madrid reignite interest in Mauro Icardi

Real Madrid have reportedly reignited their interest in Argentine striker, Mauro Icardi, and are weighing up a January move for him

According to a report by Spanish outlet Don Balon, Mauro Icardi is back on the agenda for Real Madrid, who believe they could do with the goals to continue filling Cristiano Ronaldo’s void. The European champions are scouring the possibility of signing the Argentine striker, who will cost €100 million, in January.

Mauro Icardi has evolved into one of the best strikers in the world, growing leaps and bounds since joining Inter Milan from Sampdoria in 2013. Five years on, the player has not just become the single most pivotal figure for the Nerazzurri, but has also been entrusted with the club captaincy.

The 25-year-old opened his account for the season this week, and in stunning fashion as he sparked Inter Milan’s comeback win over Tottenham in their Champions League opener. However, his exploits have attracted top clubs to him as well, with Real Madrid being long-time admirers.

In fact, Los Blancos had scoured the possibility of snapping him up in the summer transfer window as well. But, the Argentine international chose to stay put at Inter Milan, while Real Madrid failed to land a marquee striker.

Instead, Mariano Diaz returned to the Spanish capital following a solitary season with Lyon, with the 25-year-old being used as Karim Benzema’s deputy. Interestingly, Real Madrid were looking at Icardi to be the long-term replacement for Benzema, who had been flattering to deceive in the last couple of seasons.

But, with five goals in his first five matches this season, the Frenchman seems to be on course to regaining his domineering touch in the final third. However, Real Madrid believe they could still do with more goals, especially in the second half of the season when they will be looking to mount the defence of their Champions League crown.

The club board are fearful that Benzema’s goals will dry up soon, while Gareth Bale and Marco Asensio are not seen as reliable either. Icardi is thus, a viable target for Real Madrid, who could have a long-term solution as the focal point of their attack while replacing a large chunk of Ronaldo’s goals.

However, Icardi will come at a price, with Inter Milan only likely to part ways with their club captain if a suitor shells out €100 million. The figure is not too steep for Real Madrid, who would gladly part with the sum, although swooping the 25-year-old in the middle of the season could still be a tall order.

This seems like a transfer that will likely be completed next summer at the earliest, especially if Inter Milan progress further in the UEFA Champions League and remain in the hunt for the Serie A title. Till then, Real Madrid will hope Benzema continues his strong form after a solid start to the campaign.
