Transfer News: Ander Herrera seeks January exit from Manchester United

Ander Herrera is set on evaluating offers in January as he is unhappy with the club’s progress in offering him a new deal.

Ander Herrera’s future at Old Trafford has long been speculated and linked with a move away from the club. The Mirror are now reporting that the Spaniard could finally be looking at the exit door at Manchester United and is ready to evaluate his options when the January window opens, for he is unhappy with the club’s lack of progress in offering him a new deal.

Since signing for United back in 2014, Herrera never established himself as a first team starter but did make his presence felt in small pockets, instantly making him one of the players of importance. His versatile midfield roles have made him an asset of sorts, and that has prompted Jose Mourinho to want to keep hold of him for as long as possible,

He too, like the many players Jose Mourinho has shipped out since arriving at the club, is a Louis van Gaal signing. But, the Spaniard is undoubtedly rated by the Portuguese manager. Herrera signed a four-year contract upon signing for United back in 2014 and owing to his performances, the club triggered the one-year extension option in his contract last November.

But, promises of a new contract in the summer ensured that Herrera stayed put at the club, despite the possibility of returning to Athletic Bilbao. Now though, the midfielder’s camp believes that United are taking Herrera’s loyalty for granted and may not end up offering a new contract. That said, the midfielder will be able to talk to clubs in January because his current Manchester United deal will be up next summer.

Herrera has made 163 appearances for United so far and scored on 17 occasions. The Spaniard was hoping that the club would ensure, much like fellow midfielder Marouane Fellaini, that he is tied down to a new deal. But, so far without any action or word from the club, there is a certain level of acceptance that a new contract might never materialise.

However, the way United let Fellaini run down his contract and offer him fresh terms and the Belgian’s salary demands, it would be interesting to see if they do the same with Herrera. The Spaniard indeed could be an essential player considering the number of games the club has to play this season, but he may not want to wait till the end of the season as Fellaini did.
