Jamie Carragher has slammed Victor Lindelof after Manchester United’s 3-0 loss to Tottenham, claiming he’s not good enough to play at the highest level
As reported by The Sun, Jamie Carragher has gone on to criticise Victor Lindelof following Manchester United’s second loss in as many games on Monday. The Liverpool legend claimed that the Swedish international is “not good enough” to be playing at the highest level.
Lindelof has struggled to adapt to life as a Manchester United since joining from Benfica in a reported £31 million deal last summer. Last season, the Swede saw starts come on rare occasions, with Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones being ahead of him in the pecking order, although he did produce some eye catching displays.
This summer saw Lindelof’s stock rise after solid performances at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which understandably increased the optimism among Manchester United fans ahead of the 2018-19 season. But, three games into the new campaign, and the excitement and optimism seems to be fading away.
On Monday, the 24-year-old produced perhaps, one of his poorest performance in a Manchester United shirt, as the Red Devils suffered a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham at Old Trafford. And, Jamie Carragher made a scathing attack on Lindelof while doing punditry on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.
“I actually feel a bit sorry for him [Lindelof], he should not be playing at this level. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have been playing for a long time, and it [the mistakes] shouldn’t be happening at this level.”
Indeed, Manchester United’s performance against Tottenham, and particularly in the second half, was a defensive disaster class. Lindelof was among the worst performers for the Red Devils in a forgettable outing laden with defensive errors.
In the bigger picture, Manchester United’s cumulative failure at the back in their last two games perhaps only goes to vindicate Jose Mourinho, who was hell bent on bolstering the heart of defence this summer.
As far as Lindelof is concerned, a temporary move away from Old Trafford could have done wonders for his confidence, which is exactly what he seems to be lacking. For now, he remains a Manchester United player, although the going seems to be getting increasingly tougher.
