Transfer News: Jerome Boateng inching closer to PSG switch

Jerome Boateng, who was a summer target for Manchester United, has a 50-50 chance of joining PSG, as per Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness.

In an interview with Sky Sports in Germany, Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has confirmed that Jerome Boateng could join PSG before the summer transfer window slams shut. The German football legend added that the two clubs are yet to reach an agreement over the transfer fee for the defender, who was also a summer target for Manchester United.

Boateng has grown leaps and bounds since joining Bayern Munich from Manchester City in the summer of 2011. His staggering rise in stature has seen the player being regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the world, while also being a pivotal figure for Die Roten.

But, over the last couple of seasons, his status at the Allianz Arena has suffered a blow, owing to a raft of injuries. Heading into this summer’s transfer window, Boateng was reportedly seen as an expendable at Bayern, which piqued the interest of Manchester United and PSG.

At Old Trafford, Manchester United’s pursuit of a centre-back this summer was well documented. Manager Jose Mourinho has been dissatisfied with the options at his disposal, which was perhaps well vindicated by the performance of the defenders against Brighton last weekend.

Manchester United though, were unable to land a centre-back, with Boateng rejecting the possibility of making the switch to Old Trafford in the final days of the English transfer window. But, the move to PSG could still be a possibility for the 29-year-old.

The continued interest from the French champions does come as a bit of a surprise though, considering they have already bolstered the heart of their defence by signing Thilo Kehrer. The addition of the young defender means Thomas Tuchel now has four recognised centre-backs at his disposal.

But, according to Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness, a deal could still be secured with PSG for the former Manchester United target before the summer transfer window slams shut in ten days.

“Only Paris is an option, if they pay accordingly, then we will deal with it. If they do not, he will stay with us and then everything is OK. I would say the odds are 50-50.”

The comments from Hoeness come as a major contradiction to widespread reports that PSG are not interested in adding to their defensive options anymore. But, it remains to be seen if Les Parisiens indeed make a move for Boateng, or if he ends up staying at Bayern Munich.

If the German international does end up departing from Allianz Arena, Bayern could be forced into the market considering Niko Kovac has just two other centre-backs at his disposal. Another former Manchester United target, Toby Alderweireld could then be subject to another late saga. An interesting few days beckon.
