David De Gea set to sign £200,000-a-week deal with Manchester United

David de Gea, a former summer target for Real Madrid, is reportedly set to sign a bumper new deal worth £200,000 per week with Manchester United

According to a report by Daily Mirror, David de Gea is on the verge of putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal worth £200,000 per week with Manchester United. The Spaniard has also been praised by manager Jose Mourinho for not creating an unpleasant situation at Old Trafford despite interest from Real Madrid.

For the last three years, de Gea was one of several names who have been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid – a transfer that had almost seen the light of day in the summer of 2015. But, Manchester United ended up keeping hold of the Spanish international in bizarre circumstances as the move fell through in the eleventh hour.

De Gea was the subject of interest from Real Madrid this summer as well, with Los Blancos still craving for a top class goalkeeper owing to the inconsistencies of Keylor Navas. In the end though, the 27-year-old opted to remain at Manchester United, insisting that he was happy and well settled at Old Trafford.

Having been forced to look elsewhere, Real Madrid did end up bolstering the goalkeeping department, as Thibaut Courtois was signed from Chelsea. Manchester United, on the other hand, are not resting easy after retaining the services of their prized asset, and are looking to tie him down to a new long-term contract.

And, de Gea is ready to do just that, with the former Real Madrid target set to pledge his long-term future to the Red Devils by penning a new £200,000-a-week deal. The reports have also been confirmed by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, who also expressed his delight over the way the player and his agent conducted themselves.

“David is a Manchester United player, he will sign a new contract as soon as possible, he likes it here. We love him, we want him to stay. He wants to stay. I think it was a collective situation involving the player, the agent and Manchester United. The agent didn’t create a war to try to achieve his objectives.”

“He respected the club. He respected the player. The player was always keen to stay and happy to stay. The club understood how important he was and was always trying to give him the conditions to make him happy, so credit to all three.”

Mourinho’s comments could also be a thinly veiled jibe towards Mino Raiola, who has reportedly been unsettling Paul Pogba, who has been linked with clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona. De Gea though, was arguably a consummate professional, who is now set for a long-term stay at Manchester United.

The bumper new deal will also reflect his standing at the club, with de Gea one of the most pivotal players for the Red Devils over the last half-a-decade or so. Manchester United fans, meanwhile, can rest easy, knowing full well that the Real Madrid interest is now over and the star man is set to remain at the club for the long haul.
