Leicester City are poised to make a move for Danny Drinkwater, who could return to the club after a disastrous campaign at Chelsea.
According to Independent, Leicester City are considering resigning Danny Drinkwater in order to strengthen their midfield this summer. The Chelsea midfielder has been deemed surplus to the requirements next season following the arrival of Maurizio Sarri and a move away from Stamford Bridge could soon be on the horizon.
Even though Crystal Palace were tipped as the favourites to sign Drinkwater last month, their interest seemed to have cooled off after signing Max Meyer. Thus, the Foxes are presented with a golden opportunity to resign their prodigal son, who played a key role in their historic title-winning campaign two seasons ago.
Drinkwater initially moved to Leicester back in 2012 after failing to make an impact in his youth club Manchester United. Since then, he has emerged as a valuable asset for the Foxes, featuring in over 200 appearances in all competition.
But, it was his 2015/16 campaign that quickly transformed him from a decent mid-table midfielder into a world-class competitor, who helped Leicester astonishingly win the Premier League title during that corresponding season.
Although City did manage to keep hold of their prized asset the following season, Chelsea came calling with a lucrative bid last summer which they simply couldn’t refuse.
However, Drinkwater’s career turned upside down when he suffered two different kinds of injuries which kept him out for a total of almost 80 days during the first half of the last campaign. He has failed to return to his old form since and now, after the appointment of Sarri, Drinkwater will definitely be underlined as an outcast in this new season.
The Italian mastermind is known for his attractive brand of football, which focuses heavily on retaining possession through quick passes and clever movements – something that certainly doesn’t tune in with Drinkwater’s characteristics. Thus, a move away from Stamford Bridge is surely the most logical decision for the former Premier League champion at the moment.
And a return to Leicester City could potentially present himself with a glorious opportunity of redeeming himself after a disastrous spell with Chelsea. The Foxes have looked very good under Claude Puel last season and the addition of Drinkwater will only provide him with more options at his disposal in this new season.
His industry and work-ethic coupled with his sheer commitment is perfectly suited to Leicester’s style of play. But, it’s his experience in the Premier League which makes him such an appealing target for Puel’s men.
That being said, Leicester aren’t the only one interested in his services with the likes of Southampton and West Ham reportedly vying for his signature. Furthermore, the Foxes also need to act swiftly if they are to attain his services this summer especially with the transfer window slamming shut this Thursday afternoon.
