Transfer News: Real Madrid weighing up move for Christian Eriksen

Real Madrid have reportedly reignited their interest in Christian Eriksen, and are weighing up a possible move for the Tottenham playmaker.

According to a report by Spanish publication Sport, Real Madrid still have their sights set on Christian Eriksen. Florentino Perez is considering the idea of snapping up the Tottenham superstar, as he would fit Julen Lopetegui’s system quite well.

Eriksen has grown leaps and bounds since joining Tottenham in the summer of 2013. One of the most consistent players in the Premier League, the Dane has played a key role in Spurs’ advent in recent years. But, his solid displays have also shone the spotlight on the 26-year-old, who has earned many admirers, most prominent among them being Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Barcelona though, do not hold a concrete interest in Eriksen yet, and are simply keeping an eye on him. But, Real Madrid have seem to have stepped up their pursuit of the Danish international, and are pondering a possible assault on Tottenham for the player.

Initially, it was thought that Eriksen would be a replacement for either Luka Modric or Toni Kroos, with both superstars being linked with moves away from the Bernabeu. But, speculation surrounding their Real Madrid futures has completely ended, and it looks like the duo will end up staying past the summer.

To that end, Eriksen’s pursuit could be an indication of the player being deployed in an advanced role and not in midfield. If Julen Lopetegui uses the system that he so successfully employed while in charge of the Spanish National Side, the striker will likely be supported by two inside forwards instead of wingers.

Isco is likely to be one of the aforementioned forwards, with Marco Asensio an option for the other slot and Gareth Bale possibly playing upfront as he also did under Zinedine Zidane. But, beyond Asensio and Isco, there are no quality options, which makes Eriksen a viable target for Real Madrid.

The big obstacle in Los Blancos‘ pursuit of the 26-year-old will be Tottenham chief Daniel Levy, who is known to be a hard man to negotiate with. While Real Madrid have brokered deals for Modric and Bale with Spurs, this time around things might be different, even if a lucrative offer is submitted.

With just over 10 days left for the transfer window to slam shut in England, Tottenham will have very little time to identify and sign a replacement. This looks like a deal that will have to be put on the back burner by Real Madrid, to be possibly rekindled in a future window, should they still be interested.
