Transfer News: Barcelona to challenge Arsenal in Steven N’Zonzi pursuit

Barcelona are reportedly set to reignite their interest in Sevilla star Steven N’Zonzi and are set to challenge Arsenal in pursuit of the World Cup winner.

The Mirror are claiming that Barcelona are set to re-enter the race for Sevilla star Steven N’Zonzi. The Frenchman has been linked with the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona and many others, with the lanky midfielder a top target for several European clubs.

Steven N’Zonzi has managed to resurrect his stuttering career following his move to Sevilla. The Frenchman has one Europa League trophy under his belt and has been a bedrock for the Sevilla defence, acting as an able anchor man, of sorts for the La Liga club.

The Frenchman was linked with a departure from Sevilla in the summer of 2017 as well, with Arsenal the usual culprit. But, a lack of movement saw N’Zonzi commit to the La Liga club. The 29-year-old though, has managed a rare coup, by winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France, despite not taking to the pitch during the entirety of the event in Russia.

Nevertheless, the World Cup triumph is likely to increase the Frenchman’s hunger to add trophies to his cabinet. Arsenal have seen the beginning of the Unai Emery revolution at Emirates following the departure of Arsene Wenger. The Gunners have made able signings in appropriate areas as well.

As far as the midfield options are concerned, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla’s departure has been mitigated by the arrival of Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira. But, Emery is still looking for another midfielder to add to his squad, one who can act as a screen to the back four.

N’Zonzi thrived at Sevilla under Emery and is one of the players the manager trusts in the said position. With the La Liga club placing a €40 million price tag on N’Zonzi, the 29-year-old does appear to be an approachable target.

Barcelona are also looking to strengthen their midfield as well. While Miralem Pjanic and Adrien Rabiot have emerged as an option for the Catalan giants, the squad does not appear apprehensive as regards the club’s pursuit of Dani Parejo. Frenkie De Jong on the other hand, looks set to stay put at Ajax, at least for the upcoming season.

N’Zonzi would add further steel to the midfield, with Sergio Busquets not boasting as much confidence in his playing style of late. Barcelona’s re-entry will also aid Sevilla’s cause to rake in as much as they can for N’Zonzi.
