Fulham are reportedly plotting a shock move to bring former Chelsea winger Andre Schurrle back to the Premier League this summer.
According to a report by Daily Mail, Andre Schurrle is primed for his second coming in the Premier League. Fulham are interested in signing the German international, who is also the subject of interest from Everton and Crystal Palace. The former Chelsea winger has been made available for sale by Borussia Dortmund.
Schurrle’s career has gone pear-shaped since the 2014 FIFA World Cup win with Germany. The player first became a bit-part player at Chelsea in the 2014-15 season before returning to Bundesliga with Wolfsburg. 18 months later, the move to Borussia Dortmund was thought to have brought his career back on track.
But, his downward spiral has continued at Westfalenstadion, with the player managing just 51 outings in two seasons. Schurrle’s time at Dortmund is as good as over now, with the club putting him up for sale. In fact, the German international isn’t even on their pre-season tour to USA anymore, and is poised to return to the Premier League, this time as Chelsea’s rival.
There is no dearth of interest in Schurrle, with Dortmund offering the likes of Everton and Crystal Palace the chance to sign him. But, Fulham seem to be showing the most concrete of interest in securing the services of the former Chelsea star this summer.
The Cottagers have already made a splash in the transfer market by signing Jean Michael Seri, who was also coincidentally linked with Chelsea. And, Schurrle can potentially be another top signing, despite his fall in stature. The German international’s addition would bolster their attack considerably, giving Slavisa Jokanovic an option for both flanks, depending on the position Ryan Sessegnon starts in.
Crystal Palace are also showing a lot of interest. But, the Eagles are a little hesitant as Dortmund are scouring the possibility of including Schurrle in a possible deal to sign Wilfried Zaha, who Palace do not want to sell. Meanwhile, Schurrle is now likely a backup target for Everton, who are poised to sign Richarlison from Watford.
Schurrle’s next destination thus, appears to be London. Returning to a city where he has already played in with Chelsea and in a league that he already knows could do wonders for the player’s career.
Set for a fresh start in his stuttering career, Fulham look best placed to sign Schurrle. Dortmund expect to offload him this week and it remains to be seen if the Cottagers indeed end up signing the 27-year-old ahead of Crystal Palace and Everton.
