Jasper Cillessen is the latest name to emerge as a candidate to replace Thibaut Courtois at Chelsea, with the Barcelona stopper a target for the Blues.
Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo are claiming that Jasper Cillessen is on his way out of Barcelona. The Dutchman is considering a move away to restart his career to an extent. And Chelsea are looking at being the destination for the Catalan stopper, with Thibaut Courtois likely to join Real Madrid.
As soon as the grand event in Russia wrapped up, Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard have taken no time in announcing their intentions to leave Chelsea, hinting at a preference for Real Madrid. While Chelsea will fight to retain Hazard, Courtois seems to be on his way, especially with Real Madrid losing out to Alisson, who has joined Liverpool for a world-record fee.
Many a name have cropped up. Chelsea have been linked with a move for two Premier League winners – Kasper Schmeichel and the other being their very own legend Petr Cech, who now plies his trade for Arsenal. But, there are reports that the Danish stopper is on his way to AS Roma to take over the reins from Alisson.
And as far as Cech is concerned, his agent has reaffirmed his commitment towards Arsenal while iterating that there has been no approach from Chelsea. Enter: Jasper Cillessen.
The Dutchman is looking to move away from being the second choice to Marc-Andre ter Stegen at Barcelona. Despite admirable performances whenever called upon, the player has never been preferred over the German in goal, which has seen Cillessen relegated to just 21 appearances in all competitions over the span of 2 seasons.
There has never been doubts over the Dutchman’s quality between the posts, which is reflected by the number of suitors that have been lining up for the star. Liverpool will now cede interest, thanks to their world-record move for Alisson. But, Arsenal, Juventus and Chelsea are still vying for his signature.
At Chelsea, the need for a replacement for Courtois is increasing day by day. The Belgian looks set to embark on a new journey in familiar surroundings. Cillessen’s qualities along with the urge to prove himself as an able first-choice at a big club makes him the perfect fit.
To further enhance the Dutchman’s suitability, Barcelona are reportedly willing to part with him for a fee around €30 million, which would be a bargain considering what Liverpool have paid to sign Alisson, who, despite being a quality goalkeeper, has just one full season of being the first-choice at a club of a decent stature under his belt.
All in all, this looks like a deal that would benefit all parties involved. Chelsea should pursue Cillessen, if Courtois does end up leaving, for Real Madrid, or surprisingly, some other club.
