Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Marcos Alonso from Chelsea, amid appeals made by Sergio Ramos to land the player.
According to a report by Spanish publication Don Balon, Real Madrid could accelerate their pursuit of their former academy player Marcos Alonso. Sergio Ramos has pushed the demand to president Florentino Perez to sign the Spaniard to make him his new partner ahead of the upcoming season.
Marcos Alonso initially progressed through the ranks of the Real Madrid academy, although he was unable to settle himself in the first-team setup at the Santiago Bernabeu. Before moving to Chelsea in 2016, the Spanish international played for middle and lower table clubs in the Premier League and Serie A.
At Stamford Bridge though, Alonso has been a revelation, playing a pivotal figure for the Blues over the last couple of seasons. While he played a crucial role in Chelsea’s title winning 2016-17 Premier League campaign, the Spaniard was one of the standouts in the underwhelming 2017-18 season for the West Londoners.
Thus, his exploits have piqued the interests of several European giants, with the list of suitors being topped by Real Madrid, who have previously manifested an interest in Alonso and have seen captain Sergio Ramos ask Florentino Perez to secure his services.
Marcelo is reportedly set to follow in the path of Cristiano Ronaldo by leaving the club this summer. Theo Hernandez is an able deputy to the Brazilian international, who has slowly developed into his new surroundings over the course and has been earmarked by Real Madrid as a long-term solution on the left side of the defence.
But, amid a squad overhaul, the newly appointed manager Julen Lopetegui is looking to reinforce the squad with some new inclusions. Ramos though, is considering the Chelsea superstar as his next potential companion at the heart of the Real Madrid defence. Raphael Varane is currently Ramos’s central defensive partner. But, the French international has been heavily linked with a move away from Santiago Bernabeu.
Apart from Varane, Lopetegui has Nacho and Jesus Vallejo at his disposal. While Nacho is looked upon as a backup option, the report suggests that the latter would be moving away from Real Madrid this summer to seek more regular game time, as presently he is believed to be not ready for Los Blancos.
While Alonso has played as a centre-back on previous occasions, his attributes prefer him to serve in the wide areas. Nonetheless, it looks like Florentino Perez might regard Ramos’s advice to make a move for the Chelsea defender in the summer, considering Real Madrid need to fortify their squad for the new season ahead.
Alonso did recently vow his future to Chelsea, iterating that he is not moving away from the West London club anytime soon. But, a proposal to return to his boyhood club and absence of Champions League games at Stamford Bridge may overturn the decision of the 27-year-old defender.
If Marcelo indeed departs, we could see Alonso become their next left-back. But, it remains to be seen if Real Madrid will offer a lucrative offer for the player and if so, he might end up moving away from Chelsea for his former club this summer.
