Real Madrid have reportedly stepped up their interest in signing the Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante from Stamford Bridge this summer.

According to a report published by Spanish outlet Don Balon, Real Madrid have stepped up their interest in landing N’Golo Kante from Chelsea this summer. The European champions are seeking to add the services of the Frenchman, whose future at Chelsea looks very uncertain at the present moment.

N’Golo Kante joined Chelsea after the historic title-triumph season with Leicester City in 2016. The player made an immediate impact at his new club, with his work-rate and pace helping him play a crucial role in the Blues’ Premier League triumph in 2016-17, while also winning the PFA Player of the Year that season.

Despite Chelsea’s underwhelming campaign in 2017-18, Kante remained a stand-out performer for them. The 26-year-old midfielder has bolstered his reputation at the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France, where he has arguably been Les Bleus‘ most efficient player so far.

But, with Chelsea set to miss out on Champions League football next season, Kante’s future at Stamford Bridge is doubtful. Meanwhile, Real Madrid are battling European giants like Barcelona and PSG to sign him.

Real Madrid are looking to reinforce the squad with some new inclusions, as Los Blancos are preparing to begin a new era under newly appointed manager Julen Lopetegui. President Florentino Perez is ready to sell midfield maestro Luka Modric, who has entered the last phase of his career and reportedly been a subject of transfer interest from Bayern Munich.

Moreover, Mateo Kovacic, who was signed as a possible successor to Modric, is expected to leave Santiago Bernabeu this summer to seek regular game time, with Manchester City reportedly interested in him. Although, Kante will not be an a like-for-like replacement for Modric, his addition would bolster Lopetegui’s options considerably.

Thus, midfield reinforcements are the need of the hour for Real Madrid amid a squad overhaul, with Lopetegui specifically requesting for the French international. Los Merengues have thus, accelerated the negotiations with Chelsea. Kante’s addition could help add firepower to the midfield while easing the defensive obligations on Casemiro’s shoulders.

The report also suggests that Real Madrid are keen to seal the agreement as soon as possible, considering PSG are willing to pay €100 million to secure the player’s services. Barcelona are also planning to make a bid on the French superstar amid their midfield fortification, but their bitter rivals certainly seem to be in the lead.

With Champions League nights on offer, the proposal by Real Madrid can surely tempt Kante, while Chelsea appear to be keeping their options open, with Tanguy Ndombele being courted as a viable replacement. But, the talks would only advance after Kante returns from the World Cup, with France scheduled to play in the final later this week.
