Transfer News: Manchester United, Manchester City interested in Lucas Hernandez

Manchester United and Manchester City are both reportedly showing interest in Atletico Madrid star Lucas Hernandez.

According to Spanish publication Don Balon, Lucas Hernandez and his exploits with France at the 2018 FIFA World Cup is attracting interest from the Premier League. Manchester United and Manchester City have both emerged as potential suitors for the Atletico Madrid star.

Lucas Hernandez had always been touted to be a rising star. But, his brother Theo eclipsed him by earning a move to crosstown rivals Real Madrid. The Frenchman though, has become a regular now for Atletico Madrid, amassing a total of 44 appearances in the 2017-18 campaign.

But, it is his exploits at the 2018 FIFA World Cup that have raised his stock. Starting in all of the games so far for France, Lucas Hernandez has been impressive on the left side of the defence. This has piqued the interest of many clubs. And Don Balon suggest Manchester United and Manchester City are in the fray.

Manchester United have been having problems as regards the roster for the left side of the defence. Ashley Young has been the first-choice left-back, which shows everything that is wrong at United. Luke Shaw was destined to be the left-back for a decade and more.

But, Jose Mourinho has been left unimpressed by the Manchester United star so far. While Shaw will be handed another chance this season, Mourinho needs another natural option at his disposal. Diogo Dalot has signed for Manchester United, but is likely to be a competition to Antonio Valencia on the right.

Manchester City have only Benjamin Mendy to cover the left side of the defence. Fabian Delph put in an admirable shift, but Pep Guardiola would also want a natural option on the left to compete with Mendy for the starting spot.

While a price has not been quoted by Don Balon, Lucas Hernandez will command a hefty price tag. And his World Cup displays could add further weight behind Atletico Madrid’s valuation.

Lucas Hernandez could opt in favour of a stay at Atletico Madrid, with the player now an established starter at the club. On the other hand, the prospect of joining a club as bigbig as Manchester United and Manchester City could tempt the Frenchman.

Lucas though, will hope to learn from his brother Theo’s move to Real Madrid. The player has not received much game time at the Bernabeu and the Frenchman would look to avoid the same fate. A move though, is in the offing.
