Real Madrid are reportedly interested in Colombian international Mateus Uribe and are looking to bring the CF America midfielder to the Bernabeu in the summer.

Real Madrid are set for a summer overhaul, especially after their disappointing title defence in La Liga. One of the targeted areas is the midfield, with Luka Modric an ageing presence while Toni Kroos looks to be on his way out of the club in the summer. A surprise name for reinforcement has sprung up, in the form of CF America midfielder Mateus Uribe, according to Don Balon.

Mateus Uribe is a Colombian international who has spent all his footballing career in Latin America thus far. Rising in prominence during his time at Colombian outfit Atletico de Nacional recently, his transfer to Mexican giants CF America has enhanced his reputation.

His return of 11 goals and 2 assists in 31 appearances so far this season is something that has brought forth a lot of interest, especially given the fact that he thrives in a withdrawn position in the midfield. The ability to provide goals from midfield is always a welcome attribute and the same has seen a lot of European clubs take interest in the 27-year-old.

There are likely to be a lot of scouts monitoring Uribe’s performance in Russia as Colombia look to improve upon their 2014 World Cup campaign. One such club is Real Madrid, who are looking for midfield options to bring in during the summer transfer window.

With Kroos and Modric likely to be heading towards the exit door at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid will be left with no experienced campaigner in midfield. And while Florentino Perez is tempted to bring forth the young revolution in the centre of the pitch, the presence of a cultured midfielder would be needed to groom the younger gems.

Add to that the fact that there is no real competition within the squad for Casemiro, who, for one, has not been convincing of late, leading to Zidane dropping the Brazilian on a few occasions, and on the other hand, has been linked with a summer move away from Real Madrid, with PSG touted as the destination.

Uribe’s tenacity and ability to play in the hole combined with his penchant for goals is something that could be the answer to Real Madrid’s problems, at least when it comes to alternate sources of goals – something that reared its head when Cristiano Ronaldo had a dry run in the beginning of the season, which was one of the contributing factors to their woeful La Liga title defence.

While no fee has been mentioned, any amount is unlikely to be a problem for Real Madrid. The transfer will entirely depend on Uribe’s performance during the World Cup. If all goes well, we might see a Colombian in the Real Madrid squad come summer – a Colombian other than James Rodriguez.
