Marouane Fellaini is set to exit Manchester United when his contract runs out at the end of the season and Liverpool are reportedly looking to pounce on the Belgian.

According to French publication L’Equipe, Manchester United could be set to lose one of their midfielders to Liverpool on a Bosman. Marouane Fellaini is almost certain to exit Old Trafford at the end of the season, with his contract running down. And Liverpool have emerged as the latest suitor in a shock development.

Marouane Fellaini has come under a lot of scrutiny from when he was first snapped up by Manchester United to the present time. But, the Belgian has ridden the wave of criticism and finally managed to make himself a pivotal figure within the first-team setup at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.

One of the key players under the Portuguese, reports emerged of Fellaini not ready to commit to a new deal at Manchester United, which has ultimately seen him lose his place within the first-team setup again. The Belgian’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and while Mourinho has been public about wanting him to sign a new deal, Fellaini seems set to exit the club on a Bosman at the end of the season.

The Manchester derby was the most telling predicament as Jose Mourinho chose to keep all the players touted to be leaving out of the matchday squad, Fellaini being one of them. The Manchester United midfielder was linked to PSG and Monaco. But, Liverpool have emerged as a shock suitor for the towering star.

Liverpool’s interest does come as bit of a surprise as Fellaini is not the most agile or eye-pleasing midfielder and is unlikely to complement the Reds’ aggressive pressing and fluid playing style. But, one of the reasons for their interest could be Emre Can’s potential departure, on a Bosman as well.

Fellaini would add to the options in midfield and would beef up the squad while also potentially adding a Plan B in case all else fails. Also to note, Fellaini would be a cheap replacement for Can, with the Belgian also leaving on a Bosman from Manchester United.

PSG and Monaco are still likely to be the frontrunners, but Liverpool could jump ahead soon. For Liverpool would present an opportunity for Fellaini to remain in the Premier League and the Reds would also be able to get a player with Premier League experience to replace Emre Can for cheap.

Fellaini had finally been able to receive much love from the Manchester United faithfuls. But, the love could soon turn into ire, if the Belgian does end up leaving for Liverpool of all clubs.
