Transfer News: Barcelona reignite interest in Adrien Rabiot

Barcelona have reportedly reignited their interest in Adrien Rabiot as Ernesto Valverde looks to improve his squad further this summer.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have set their sights on Adrien Rabiot over a move in the summer transfer window. The Frenchman has little over one year left on his current deal with PSG and is stalling over a renewal.

Rabiot is a player whose name has been surrounded with a lot of hype and excitement ever since he made his senior debut for PSG as a 17-year-old in 2012. Over the last six years, the player has steadily grown in stature at Parc des Princes, and is now a mainstay in midfield for Les Parisiens.

All of 22, Rabiot already has almost 200 appearances to his name at PSG and is starting to establish himself in the French National Side as well. But, his future with the runaway Ligue 1 leaders has come under a cloud, as per the report by Mundo Deportivo, and his situation has alerted Barcelona.

Barcelona were in the market for Rabiot last summer as well, and had also proposed including him in the deal that saw Neymar make his way to PSG. The player is now stalling on a new deal with the French club, with his current contract set to expire in June, 2019.

Meanwhile, at Barcelona, Ernesto Valverde’s midfield options may be stacked following the arrival of Arthur Melo in the summer. Although, the futures of Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta hang in the balance, with the duo being heavily linked with moves away from Camp Nou.

Irrespective of their uncertain futures, both Rakitic and Iniesta are on the wrong side of 30, and with the likes of Andre Gomes and Denis Suarez failing to impress, the need to sign another midfielder seems to be a priority for Barcelona.

In particular, Rabiot could be a like-for-like replacement for Rakitic at the heart of midfield with his tremendous work-rate and progressive ideology, potentially making the PSG midfielder a long-term solution for Barcelona.

PSG, on the other hand, will attempt to agree a new deal with the player before the summer transfer window opens. Otherwise, they might have to cut their losses and do a deal with Barcelona, or any other club that joins Rabiot’s pursuit this summer.

It will now be interesting to see how things develop in the months to come. For now, Barcelona seem well placed in their attempt to bring Rabiot to Camp Nou in the summer transfer window.
