Transfer News: Manchester United plotting £40 million summer swoop for Ryan Sessegnon

Manchester United are reportedly plotting a £40 million summer swoop for Ryan Sessegnon, who is also being targeted by Tottenham Hotspur

According to a report in The Sun, Manchester United are ready to step up their pursuit of teen prodigy Ryan Sessegnon by lodging a £40 million bid. Tottenham are also interested in signing the Fulham star in the summer transfer window.

Sessegnon has taken English football by storm since breaking into the Fulham first-team setup last season. All of 17, the player’s stature has skyrocketed in just over a year, so much so that he is one of the first names on the team sheet at Craven Cottage, and for good reason.

Sessegnon hasn’t just potential in his defensive abilities, but also the versatility to play across different positions on the left flank, be it as a defender, midfielder or even as a winger. The attacking inclination is palpable in his return as well, with the player bagging 14 goals and 5 assists in 41 outings this season.

It is thus, not surprising at all that the who’s who of English football are showing a lot of interest in him. While all the prominent names have monitored his progress over the last one year, Manchester United and Tottenham are the front-runners in his pursuit.

At Manchester United, Luke Shaw’s future has been thrown into disarray, with reports of a bust-up with Jose Mourinho following his performance in the FA Cup win over Brighton last weekend. The manager was especially critical of the English youngster, and it looks like calls for a Shaw resurgence were rather premature.

The report suggests that Manchester United are ready to offload Shaw in the summer and replace him with Sessegnon, who could soon take over from veteran Ashley Young. But, Tottenham are in the fray for the player as well.

Mauricio Pochettino currently has Ben Davies and Danny Rose as his left-back options. But, the future of Rose, who has coincidentally been linked with Manchester United, hangs in the balance, which is why the Tottenham boss is eyeing Sessegnon as a long-term solution on the left side of defence.

The reports states that Manchester United are ready to keep Rose as a fallback option, and are ready to launch a £40 million summer move for Sessegnon. Fulham, meanwhile, might have managed to keep hold of the player in January, but might have to give in to the overtures of either the Red Devils or Tottenham come summer.

As far as Sessegnon is concerned, there is only one way for him, and that is up. It now remains to be seen if Manchester United indeed succeed in bringing him to Old Trafford in the summer, or if Tottenham steal a march on them instead.
