Manchester United legend Paul Scholes claims Luke Shaw could be the “best in the world” at Tottenham

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has tipped Luke Shaw to improve and become the best in the world if he joins Tottenham.

As reported by Tribal Football, BT Sport pundit has claimed that Luke Shaw should call time on his Manchester United career and join a club like Tottenham, where he could feature regularly and even become the best left-back in the world.

Shaw’s time at Manchester United has been nothing short of disappointing. The player arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2014, full of promise and with a burgeoning reputation of being one of the most exciting young full-backs in the world.

But, the four years that have followed have been fraught with injuries, fitness problems and poor form, with current manager Jose Mourinho highly critical of Shaw for the most part during his reign at Manchester United. It did seem like he had turned a corner in a two-month period that saw him start more games than Ashley Young.

There were reports that Shaw was set to be rewarded with a contract renewal as well. However, his future has been thrown into disarray with Mourinho singling Shaw out for criticism following Manchester United’s FA Cup win over Brighton – a game that saw him being subbed off at half-time.

In the aftermath of the game, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes had his say on the conundrum that Shaw finds himself in. And the BT Sport pundit has claimed that the youngster would be able to resurrect his career at a club like Tottenham, where he could even become the best in the world.

“I still believe he could be the best in the world and in the summer he could go to Tottenham or somewhere and he could improve. I couldn’t see a difference between him and Young. I think sometimes, managers get in their head that there’s a player not for them.

“For me I think he could be brilliant but his manager will still find something wrong with him. It is disappointing because when Luke Shaw came you thought what a player that is and he could be the best.”

Tottenham have been linked with Shaw previously, and are reportedly in the market for a left-back. As per widespread rumours, Danny Rose is likely to depart from the North London club in the summer, with Manchester United coincidentally among the clubs that have been linked with him.

In Mauricio Pochettino, Shaw will not just have a manager who he has worked with previously, but also someone who has been hailed for his contributions to the careers of several young players at Tottenham. Manchester United might not object either, with reports linking them to several left-backs.

Only time will tell if Shaw can claw his way back into Mourinho’s scheme of things. Following the Manchester United manager’s comments though, it looks like he might just be better off elsewhere, and Tottenham could offer him that escape route.
